It is located in Cuyahoga County on the eastern edge of Cleveland metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Garfield Heights was George Washington in 1795. On November 7, 1812, General Anthony Wayne marched his army through Garfield Heights on their way to battle against Spanish forces at San Jacinto. The Battle of Cedar Hill took place nearby and resulted in victory for Wayne's forces over those of Spanish general Santa Anna. In 1824, after much debate, Ohio voters passed a resolution approving annexation by Indiana as part of the United States Constitution. This led to the town's incorporation as a borough on December 3, 1825. At its incorporation, Garfield Heights had a population of around 1,500 people and an economy based mostly on agriculture and manufacturing products such as shoes and clothing; however it started to grow rapidly due to immigration from Hungary and Czechoslovakia beginning in the late 19th century (see also: Hungarian immigration). In 1870, two brothers founded an agricultural firm in what became Garfield Heights; they were Edwin Hite and Jesse James Hite. In 1888, Union Manufacturing Company began manufacturing cigars for American Tobacco Company (ATC). The company continued to operate until its closure in 1937. During World War II, many companies moved to Greater Cleveland to take advantage of wartime production opportunities: Union Manufacturing Company relocated to Lake Erie; American Wagon & Horses produced munitions at Whitehall Arsenal near FirstEnergy National Tower; United States Rubber Corporation operated a plant near Shaker Heights that manufactured rubber products during the war; Anheuser-Busch InBev opened its brewery at Fairmount Park in Norwalk during wartime production; and Coca Cola Bottling Works constructed two plants—one inside the park itself and one adjacent to Geauga Lake—to produce soft drinks for America during wartime production shortages caused by dietary restrictions announced by Franklin D. The first store in what is now Garfield Heights opened in 1886. By 1909, there were six businesses in the town. In 1914, a movie theater opened in town and it remained an important part of the community until it closed in 1978. The population of Garfield Heights decreased from around 20,000 to about 10,000 over the next few decades. However, its growth potential continued to be stimulation due to its location on the railroad and its close proximity to Cleveland Hopkins Airport. In recent years, some redevelopment has occurred within the boundaries of Garfield Heights with new housing developments and a new downtown plaza being built along Euclid Avenue between First Street and Second Street.
