Garfield Heights is one of five townships in Richland County and is bordered by Lake Erie to the north, Maple Leaf Township to the west, and Muskegon Heights Township to the south. The first settlers in what would become Garfield Heights were farmers who arrived from New York around 1792. They built a cabin on a hillock near modern-day Springvale Road and started trading with other Native Americans for goods they collected from upstate New York. By 1837, there were 5 houses in town and two stores. A post office was established in 1838 and named after George Washington Garfield, Jr., an investor in the town who also donated land for a schoolhouse and other public buildings. The first postmaster was James Caldwell Sr.. Garfield Heights saw its heyday during Prohibition years when many people moved here to avoid being caught with booze or drugs. In 1919, prohibition was repealed nationwide and most of the alcohol production had ceased by that point; however, grocery stores continued selling liquor until well into the 1940s. In 1937, Garfield Heights became home to its only high school when Cleveland State High School opened on Summit Avenue across from what later became FirstEnergy Stadium (now Quicken Loans Arena). At that time it was one of only four high schools located within walking distance of each other in Greater Cleveland – along Euclid Avenue between University Circle (later Ightwood Mall) anduyver Village/Stuart Park (now University Circle/Warner Robins Center), as well as at Case Western Reserve University’s Main Campus across Euclid Avenue from Prospect Park West (then called Forest Hills). throughout much of recent history both schools have been housed inside FirstEnergy Stadium which has made them difficult or impossible for students or staff to attend without driving miles away each day! In 1956–57 Garfield Heights hosted America’s Junior Olympics which featured events such as track & field etc.; afterwards it reverted back to its rural roots with few permanent residents until gentrification began taking hold starting around 1990 characterized by increased trade industry presence especially along Northeast Side streets like Delaware Ave./Wabash Ave., Huron Rd./Beach Rd., Springvale Rd./Sandusky Rd., Greenwood Ave./Avondale Rd., Southgate Dr./Euclid Ave.– all now commercial districts filled with large boxy retailers more focused on finished products than education or cultural attractions given their proximity to highways! However some small pockets of traditional Garfield homes remain among these busy corridors

Garfield Heights is a city in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 17,811 at the 2010 census. The city is the home of Case Western Reserve University and the Garfield Heights Mall. The first European to visit what is now Garfield Heights was John Deere in 1812. A post office called Garfield Heights was established in 1837, and the town grew rapidly due to its position as a key junction on the southern border of Muskingum County. In 1851, railroad construction began through nearby Pickerington Township and right-of-way for the Cincinnati & Dayton Railroad were purchased from local landowners. The town became an incorporated village in 1855 and annexed by Cleveland in 1865. When Cleveland incorporated as a municipality it decided to name its new municipal building after former Vice President Martin Van Buren because he had been influential in its development. On December 14, 1888, Van Buren's family erected a marble memorial statue of him at his old home on Euclid Avenue within sight of City Hall. The statue remains today and can be seen from many sidewalks throughout the city center including City Hall Park where it once stood (now part of Case Western Reserve University). Garfield Heights has experienced significant economic growth since it attained Municipal status in 1965; however, some aspects have not kept up with this rapid growth such as infrastructure or transportation which have resulted in traffic congestion on several major arteries around City Hall Park and other neighborhoods near downtown during peak hours. Despite these challenges, efforts are underway by Mayor Tom Fenton to improve conditions by creating more surface streets/ thoroughfares with dedicated bike lanes/paths connecting various neighborhoods within their boundaries while also improving mass transit access to downtown Cleveland through plans for light rail service extending eastward from Union Station into Garfield Heights soonest possible!
