Garfield Heights is a town in the northwest part of Ohio, United States. The population was 11,822 at the 2010 census. It is home to the Garfield Heights Municipal Airport. The first guns were brought into the area by hunters and farmers in 1827. A process known as “muzzleloading” allowed for more accuracy with firearms and led to an increase in gun violence in America. The town was founded on November 3, 1800 by Captain James Ketchum and his family as a trading post between Pennsylvania and Canada. On December 12, 1800, Ketchum organized a militia company that lasted until 1802 when he disbanded it after being forced to leave Canada because of Native American raids. In 1807, Indian trader George Armstrong established a Trading Post at what is now Garfield Heights after traveling through this area on his way from Sandusky to Detroit. In 1812, another Indian trader named John Wood bought land at what is now Garfield Heights from James Ketchum for $5 per acre (the price then doubled every five years). In 1830, General William Henry Harrison visited this area while campaigning for president and ordered all Indians removed from their lands within 10 miles of Cincinnati due to complaints about their trade with Americans settlers. While there are references to guns being used in fights between settlers and natives in early records of the area (specifically around 1799), they were not actually used until much later when muzzleloaders became easier to use with greater accuracy than smooth-bore pistols. Garfield Heights, Ohio is located in the Mahoning Valley region of northeast Ohio. The area has been inhabited by Native Americans for centuries, and early settlers were part of the Delaware Nation. In 1814, General George Washington was transferred from Philadelphia to Cincinnati as commander of American forces in Europe. He arrived at the Mahoning Valley and founded a military encampment here. After several months, he departed for home with his army and most of his supplies on October 15th, 1814. The area became known as "Washington's Camp." In 1861, the United States fought an unsuccessful war against Confederate forces under President Abraham Lincoln. Many Garfield Heights residents served in the Union army and some later returned home to help rebuild after the war. Most notably, Edwin Ladd was one of those who returned to help build Cleveland's first hospital. Today, Garfield Heights is a largely residential neighborhood with few businesses or commercial corridors remaining. However, there are a number of parks and open space areas within its boundaries that offer opportunities for exercise and recreation.

Garfield Heights is the most populous incorporated community in Cleveland and it is also one of the most ethnically diverse towns in Northeast Ohio. The town was laid out by Colonel John Marshall Garfield and named for him. The first white settler in what would become Garfield Heights was James Caldwell, who arrived in 1813. The first commercial development in what would become Garfield Heights occurred when Peter Pettit erected a store on West Fair Street in 1830. Pettit's store became known as "Pettit's Block". A second store, operated by Prentice Thacher from 1834 to 1840, was located at 4th Avenue and Vine Streets. In 1836, John Morton opened his own grocery business on North Clinton Avenue near Euclid Road. Morton's Grocery became known as "Morton's House". In 1839, Ebenezer Horton established an inn called the Hope House on North Union Avenue near East 117th Street; this inn served as the nucleus of what would become Village Hall District No. 2 (now part of Downtown Cleveland). Horton also built a blacksmith shop on North Union Avenue which served as home to several African American families until 1953 when they moved to nearby Tremont neighborhood. On November 3, 1850, while sitting inside his home on West Superior Street during a thunderstorm that had developed over Ironton Township northeast of Columbus Junction*, Colonel John Marshall Garfield (the namesake of Garfield Heights) observed Native Americans playing around his house and decided to name their village after them – Arlington Heights after General George Washington's ancestral home at Mount Vernon* – thus becoming one of America's first Indian villages.* In 1851–1854*, four more villages were formed within present-day Cleveland County: Defiance Township (formed November 3rd 1850), Rocky Ridge Township (formed December 15th 1850), Arlington Heights Borough (formed January 17th 1853), and Sewickley Township (formed February 5th 1855).Maple Leaf Park Reserve#1 later became part ofDefiance Township* but remained under reservation control until 1959 with its boundaries unchanged except for changing from township to city limits.#2 *NOTE: The originalVillage Hall District No #2 did not include all or any parts now included withinDefianceCity* . map

The name of the town may come from the Garfield Forest (now part of Medina), which was originally called "Garfield Heights." The first store in Garfield Heights opened in 1870. In 1896, the first post office opened in the town. On October 9, 1898, the first school in Garfield Heights opened as an elementary school for children of farmers living around Medina and Ironton counties. In 1902, Gilbert Crouse became president of The Cleveland Press Company and bought land east of present-day Garfield Heights to build a new printing plant that would be known as The Cleveland News Company Incorporated. That same year saw the opening of what is now known as Park Avenue Shopping Center on Park Road north of Euclid Avenue NW., just west of where it currently stands to accommodate more than 100 stores built between 1902 and 1957; much of this development still stands today. In 1958, when western Ohio underwent a television experiment with American Broadcasting Corporation's WEWS-TV (channel 5), local citizens banded together to form a committee to purchase programming rights from WEWS-TV for use on their own station; these efforts resulted in the creation of WTTE (channel 3) which began operations on November 15 that year. On December 2nd, 1961 Representative John Fetterman introduced H.R. 6404 into Congress entitled "An act to authorize construction or Acquisition by reason thereof of a shopping center known as Park Avenue Shopping Center". This legislation provided that if approval were granted for construction or acquisition within one hundred years thereafter all property within one mile radius should be included within such mall's boundaries regardless whether it had been developed previously or not – something that proved critical given that other malls like Overbrook Mall were established outside those boundaries over time while Park Ave.]] ultimately failed due to opposition from nearby residents who felt they had been unfairly taken advantage OF their community by developers ].] In 1977 Stephen McKinley took office as Mayor after serving two terms out of Vice President Dick Cheney’s directorship [of Energy Resources Development Administration]. McKinley led an aggressive effort to revitalize downtown with an investment including demolishing storefronts along Euclid Street between Third and Fourth avenues NW.;[ resulting in many businesses moving into newer locations near FirstEnergy Stadium], developing Polk Place further south across Fulton Street from Western Reserve University;[ creating what is now Midtown Station]; increasing funding for city services through levies placed on individual businesses owners; and expanding zoning laws allowing larger buildings without full rooftop decks onto vacant lots near Second avenue NW., which helped increase housing options for low-income people close to downtown].] In 1984 he ran unopposed against incumbent Tom Foley who won re-election with over 73% percent support from registered voters..
