Garfield Heights is a city in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 20,032 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city is named after General Nathan Bedford Forrest, who led a slave rebellion in Georgia and was hanged for it. Garfield Heights was first settled by Indians in 1788 as part of the Shawnee Empire. The town was incorporated on November 2, 1825. In 1830, General William Henry Harrison lodged at the house of Gosnells in Garfield Heights and became friends with its owner John Gosnells Sr., which helped begin Garfield’s growth as a community of farmers and entrepreneurs. The population increased rapidly from about 1,200 in 1830 to over 10,000 by 1860 when Garfields were annexed into Cleveland. The American Civil War began in late 1861 and quickly escalated into combat; within four months of Cincinnati’s surrender on April 12th 1861 there were more than 3,000 Union troops garrisoned within two miles (3 km) of downtown Akron (the proximate center for trade and commerce). On July 16th 1861 Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell captured Myrickville – an important strategic point on the east-west rail line linking Sandusky with Youngstown – effectively stunning any hopes that Akron might become an important industrial center during the war. As a result of this capture most residents left or were forced to flee their homes to escape rebel occupation; only 4% remained by 1865 when Union forces recaptured Myrickville three years later. During Reconstruction efforts following the end of the Civil War Garfield Heights regained some popularity as a small town while many residents went back to farming or worked in local mills or businesses supporting Reconstruction efforts until 1880 when prohibitionist politics took hold throughout much of America leaving little opportunity for non-white citizens living inside white neighborhoods such as those around Akron during this period leading to high rates of crime and social unrest among these groups which continued through prohibitionism's repeal in 1920 bringing economic stability and opportunities for majority- Caucasian residents during that time period known as "The Great American Race Catastrophe". Despite temporary progress however Crime rates have slowly started decline since then but remain high especially compared to other inner city neighborhoods where crime rates are usually lower due to policing strategies specifically targeting gangs/drug dealers etc instead redeploying resources elsewhere resulting in less violent crimes overall despite steady increase from 2010 onwards . In recent years there has been effort put forth by Mayor Stratton & City Councilmember Burkholder seeking annexation into Euclid Township creating new public services & facilities including: A recreation hall / gymnasium / library / police substation - all funded thru bonds issue allowing annexation would bring much needed tax revenue which could be used towards infrastructure projects such as sidewalks replacement bridges conversions & lighting upgrades etc Additionally annexation would also create another school district allowing more children access quality education outside neighborhood schools making Garfield Heights one stop shop for education across Greater Cleveland

Garfield Heights is a town in Medina County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,131 at the 2010 census. The community originated on a farmstead near the present-day intersection of Highways 97 and 442. The name Garfield Heights comes from General John Garver's centennial celebration in 1881. Garfield had been part of the Defiance Township government since its establishment in 1836. The first settlers in what is now Garfield Heights were workers on the nearby Cuyahoga River coal mines. In 1839 they founded the village of Canandaigua on a peninsula formed by high water across the river from their original site. They named it after early settler Daniel Webster Griffin, who had helped them purchase land for their village. By 1850 Canandaigua had grown to include a store and four small homes; it remained an agricultural center until after World War II when manufacturing became more widespread in Medina County. Because much of Canandaigua's output came from sugar beets (the primary crop at that time), it was called "Breadand Beets" until about 1880 when some residents began to market baskets of fresh fruit as snacks instead of candy bars or cake balls (a type ofandise known then as "doughnuts"). After becoming organized into wards for electioneering purpose in 1902, Canandaigua changed its name to Garfield Heights Village but kept its post office designation until 1973 when it became part of Medina City limits
Garfield Heights was founded in 1814 by George Washington Garfield and his wife, Martha. The community grew rapidly after it was designated as the new town site for what is now Hamilton Township. The first post office was established in 1816, and the first store was opened in 1827. By 1830, Garfield had become a leading commercial center in the area. In 1836, the township became part of Hamilton County and Garfield Heights became its capital. The city of Cleveland annexed Garfield Heights in 1975 and the name has been changed several times since then to reflect its changing demographics.
