Garfield Heights is a city in the Ohio Valley region of the United States. The population was 20,593 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton, OH, Metropolitan Statistical Area. Garfield Heights is located on the southern edge of Akron and is bordered by Canton to the east, Fairview Heights to the north, and Strongsville to the west. The first settlers in what would become Garfield Heights were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1634. They named their community after Sir George Washington's estate at Mount Vernon in Virginia. By 1800, there were over 150 houses in Garfield Heights and it had a school and an ice cream parlor called The Park House. In 1853, John Marshall donated 5 acres (20 hectares) of land near Muskingum Avenue and Market Street for a public square which became known as "Marshall Square." In 1892, when Akron was founded as an independent city, it annexed Garfield Heights along with many other villages around it including Fairview Township (nowData Hill), Muskingum Township (now Mayfield Village), and Winton Hills Township (now Xenia). In 1901-1902, during Cleveland's rapid growth after becoming a municipality under statehood, streets were rechristened with new names such as Superior Boulevard (which now runs through downtown Akron), Euclid Avenue (later renamed Clinton Avenue after President James Buchanan), Mt Pleasant Road (later renamed Greenlawn Drive after American Revolutionary War general George Washington), Arlington Boulevard (later renamed main street after President James K. Polk), Woodbridge Road (later renamed Elmhurst Drive after English Prime Minister Lord Palmerston), Uniondale Road (later renamed Brush Brook Drive following World War I veteran General John J. Pershing's exploratory trip through Northeast Ohio)), Central Park Boulevard (( later replaced by Tremont Boulevard ), Harrison avenues (( later replaced by Southgate avenues ), Taylor roads (( later replaced by Caldwell roads ))) and more! In 1951-1952 when Euclid Avenue became University Circle due to construction of Interstate 70 just south of town center across from Lake Erie resources/industries; Main Street changed its name back to Garfield Heights Municipal Court Street; Euclid Avenue also became home to Northwest Nazarene School until that institution moved into its own building on Statewide Highway 5 in 1999 Additionally Northside Mall opened up on Euclid Ave., just east of downtown Akron during this time period On September 15th 1998 City Council approved demolition of all but one building on Northwest Nazarene School property - creating much needed land for future development !! Garfield Heights, Ohio is a small town in the southern part of the United States. It has a population of about 23,000 people and is located on the border of Cuyahoga County and Medina County. Garfield Heights was founded in 1881 by Grady and Jennie Garland. The first school was built in 1886. The town was incorporated in 1903. In 1965, it merged with neighbouring unincorporated communities to form Garfield Heights-Ross Township. Garfield Heights is one of six townships in Cuyahoga County and one of twelve townships statewide. It is also one of four townships that make up Cleveland’s city limits. The history of Garfield Heights dates back to 1881 when Grady and Jennie Garland founded the town on land they had acquired from Simon Garfield for $5 dollars per acre. At first, there were only a few homes and businesses serving the community which consisted mostly of farmers who bought lands around the village site for farming purposes or used them as grazing land for their horses or cattle. By 1892, there were over 100 residents living in Garfield Heights proper with several stores, a post office, a hotel, two churches (oneMethodist, one Baptist), three schools (grades 1-4), two barns/stockyards/oaks trees farmsteads (which served as dwellings for local farmers during winter months), four residences (two single family dwellings and two multi-family dwellings) and five acres (20 hectares) Agricultural Experiment Station). During World War I - which saw America enter into conflict against Great Britain - many citizens volunteered to serve within the military including Grady Garland who became an officer with the US Army’s 6th Infantry Division at Fort McNair where he supervised food supply operations while also providing guidance to other soldiers on how to Properly Store Supplies while stationed overseas at El Alamein desert camp near Tripoli Libya; later he returned home after being discharged from service early due to wounds received at war – but never forgot his time spent overseas working side by side with American troops! In 1922 when Cleveland Municipal Railway began construction on its new line between Cleveland Hopkins International Airport & downtown Cleveland – cutting through what would become known as “Garfield Hills” – residents of neighboring Ross Township applied for permits allowing them to build homes along said railroad tracks so that they could have easy access to jobs located closer to downtown Cleveland & relief services if necessary during times of natural disasters such as floods or earthquakes etc… After careful consideration given their requests & findings from various engineering consultants hired by CMYRA – including those from noted civil engineers like George Wirtz – allocating an additional 10 acres (& 3 structures) adjacent unto our existing township lines within boundaries granted us permission & status asResidents OF THE COMPANY NOT AGAINST ANY FORM OF LEGAL ACTION FILED BY THE COUNTY OR CITY OF CLEVELAND IN RESPECT TO THE CONSTRUCTION OF A RAILROAD NEAR OUR TOWNHOOD! As soon as this large area had been designated & approved by our elected officials we started building… finally establishing life within our borough since 1923!! Nowadays we are proud owner’sof massive tracts outside both municipalities boundaries which continue To provide excellent rural living opportunities today especially considering current economic conditions
Garfield Heights was founded in 1881 by Michael C. Garfield, the son of the former U.S. Vice President, James K. Garfield. The city was named for General George Washington, who had died in 1799 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. The first post office was established in 1885 and the first building to be built in the city was a garage on Cedar Avenue. In 1902, Garfield Heights became a borough and its first mayor was John J. Duffey. On May 1, 1907, the borough merged with neighboring Dayton to form Middletown Township (renamed Garfield Heights on January 1, 1922). The population of Middletown Township grew rapidly during World War II as many people moved to serve in the war effort or returned home after it ended.
