Garfield Heights is named after United States President James A. Garfield, who was assassinated in 1881. It became an incorporated village in 1906, and it had a population of 11,521 as of the 2000 census. The first settlers to what is now Garfield Heights were families from Fort Washington in western Ohio. In 1796, General George Washington visited Fort Washington and saw that there was no more land for him to inhabit as he had been issued 3 million acres (1 km2) by the British empire on which he had constructed his army during America's independence struggle. The land was distributed among other American leaders based on their political power or military experience at the time - George Washington received 1/8th of a mile (0.3 km2) on each side of Great Miami Creek within what is now Erie County while Present-day Cincinnati took 3/8ths of a mile (0.6 km2). In 1801, John Crampton platted out 4 lots in what are now Butler and Hamilton counties with others soon joining in development including John Lappin and Salmon Peebles who built homes between 1800-1805 on lands then known as “Doris” along Little Miami Creek adjacent to present day Garfield Heights Cemetery just east of where Stinson Road meets Fourth Street today. From early times until 1906 when village status was granted it functioned primarily as agricultural communities with few residents other than farmers living near their fields or working near county roads providing transportation access to those areas for milk production which would go into local markets throughout much ofwest central Ohio producing overall crop value worth $4 million USD per year resulting from this type interchangeability IOW directly connected to major eastern markets such as New York City through running parallel open countryside rivers valleys etc without depending upon carriage services available only via wagon trains overland ........... This type commercial interaction generated new wealth for many people thereby stimulating economic growth .......... ...

In 1870, Garfield High School was established in the city and Garfield Township was created in 1902. The city annexed its neighboring communities of Mentor and Hubbardston in 1907 and 1908, respectively.
