It was founded in 1837 by Michael O’Brien, an Irishman who became an American general during the Mexican-American War. After that campaign, he decided to settle in what is now Garfield Heights because it had been given to him as part of the land grant made to his ancestor John Dolan by President George Washington. The town grew rapidly after Garfield High School was built in 1902. Today, Garfield Heights is one of the most diverse communities in Northwest Ohio. Its citizens are drawn from all over the United States and around the world, and they have a rich history with handguns. In addition to its gun shops and ranges, Garfield Heights also has two professional football teams—the Cleveland Browns (a team based in Cleveland) and the Detroit Lions (a team based in Detroit)—and a vibrant arts scene.

Garfield Heights is located on the southern edge of Cleveland and bordered by the city of Cleveland to the north and east, Willoughby to the south, and Mentor to the west. The first European settlers in what would become Garfield Heights were Frenchmen who arrived in 1688 during King George II's migration from France. They named their new settlement after General James Monroe which they found along the now-defunct French River. In 1792, when Ohio became a U.S. state, Carroll Township was set off from Stark County and its residents voted to incorporate as a town under the name of Garfield Heights on December 12th of that year. The first mayor was John Ahern who served from 1802 to 1807; he was succeeded by David Crouch (1807-1814). The Second Bank building still stands today within reach of most residents on Sixty-fifth Street between Euclid Avenue and Maple Leaf Road – one block east of where it once stood in downtown Garfield Heights! On November 2nd 1840, President Jackson signed into law "An Act for Amending certain Laws Relating to Justices", which provided for creation of an circuits court system throughout Ohio with three judges instead of just two as at present; these three justices would include one each from Butler, Summit and Medina counties which made up what would be known as "the Circuit Court System". This act created what would later be known as "Garfield Heights" township - we believe because this spot had been used by early settler Joshua Green (1768-1837) for his farmstead near modern day Parkview Drive – so much so that Joshua's widow donated land adjacent to her home park there in honor of her late husband’s memory! / / / For many years after this event occurred... some people erroneously thought that Garland Heights actually hailed from Clearwater Township but this ... error has been corrected recently through research conducted by our staff members!

The first post office opened in Garfield Heights on November 1, 1837. In 1860, the city became part of the new state of Ohio and was renamed Cleveland.
