Garfield Heights is a city in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 24,835 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Garfield Heights dates back to 1836 when settlers founded the town on land that now includes much of what is today Garfield Heights and other areas. In 1853, the first school was built in what is now Garfield Heights and classes began for students from rural districts in northeastern Ohio. Eventually, Garfield Heights became an industrial center with a large manufacturing sector during the early 20th century. However, after World War II the city's fortunes declined as industry shifted to other locations such as Akron and Toledo. However, since 2000s there has been a gradual revival of the economy with new businesses opening up in downtown and along its lakeshorefront waterfront area. The current name of Garfield Heights comes from General John Garvin who led American forces during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). He named his town after himself to commemorate his victory over Mexican forces at Toxteth Park near Cleveland. When General Garvin died in 1852, his widow donated land to create a cemetery for her husband's soldiers which still stands today within sight of downtown. In 1875, local businessman Niles Eldredge purchased land east of downtown and developed it into what is now known as Eldredge Boulevard/Highway 604
Garfield Heights was first settled in 1811. The town was named for General John C. Garfield, the 20th president of the United States. The first post office in Garfield Heights was founded in 1814. In 1845, the town became a city and was renamed after George Washington. In 1907, the city annexed neighboring towns of Westlake and Arlington Heights.
