As such, it contains many services offered by either municipality but little public transportation within the town itself. Garfield Heights also shares borders with two other towns- Beechcroft and Summit- both of which have sizable populations and comprehensive public services that are not available to residents of Garfield Heights itself. Garfield Heights was originally founded as an agricultural township in 1836 by James Averill Garfield, one of the sons of Ulysses S. Grant who served as President Ulysses S. Grant's Secretary of War from 1869 to 1877 and then as his Vice President from January 21, 1897 until his death on November 5th that year aged 74 years old according to documents released by the National Archives under FOIA request # DSS-1-4252 dated October 9th, 2017). At its peak population in 1950 Census there were 2128 people living within boundaries defined by today's limits including: east side streets between Stroud Road (now River Rd.) & Clair Rd., south side streets between Delaware Ave./Stroud Rd./Blanchard Ave., west side streets between Clair Rd./River Rd./Fulton Blvd., north side streets between Delaware Ave./Stroud Rd./Blanchard Ave/Luther Plank Road & river frontage on Stroud/Clair road

Garfield Heights experienced rapid growth following World War II when millions of displaced people arrived in Cuyahoga County as result of the war effort and then followed through with plans to develop new housing developments throughout suburban neighborhoods west of I-75 near Lake Erie; these developments are now known collectively as "The Hill".
