The townspeople voted to rename their new community after Ulysses S. Grant on April 14, 1865 due to his role in helping to end Reconstruction in America following the Civil War. During its early years, Garland Heights enjoyed some prosperity thanks to its location near Cleveland's transportation hubs and numerous manufacturing plants that produced products such as shoes and bicycles. However, during World War II many of these factories closed down due to rationing; this led to an overall decline for Garland Heights during the war years. However, there has been a recent resurgence of interest within the community for local history and culture because of changes taking place within Cleveland over the past few decades including increased tourism visitation and redevelopment along State Route 9 east of downtown which has created more opportunities for residents to interact with their ancestors who lived here before them as well as people from other nearby communities who have relocated here over time (e.g., Euclid Avenue). Garfield Heights began slowly annexing neighboring townships beginning around 1840 when settlers from York Township moved into what would become Garland Heights; however annexation continued fairly steadily until about 1920s when it accelerated somewhat due to various political factors including growing demands from larger cities for land within commuting distance (Cleveland had annexed many small villages throughout central Ohio during this time but primarily targeted those located within ten miles of its city limits). During this period also came significant residential development with several large homes becoming available outside of town proper; these developments are often cited as examples of how annexation can lead to growth without significantly altering social or economic conditions inside town boundaries while concurrently adding valuable housing stock meant for single occupancy rather than multiple generations living together on one property (a phenomena known as "gentrification"). Furthermore, although most residents today still identify themselves primarily as beingfrom either Cleveland or adjacent suburbs they continue nonethelessto maintain strong cultural ties both within their own community and across different parts of Greater Cleveland through events like Eidolon Days Celebrations/Festival or Market days which take place every year near downtown Columbus where local businesses join forces with visitors from surrounding communities for traditional market stalls and food demos etcetera
Garfield Heights was founded in 1800 by Nicholas Garfield. It became a town in 1827 and was named for the then-president of the United States, James K. Polk. The population of Garfield Heights reached 21,000 by 1907. In 1916, the first skyscraper in Garfield Heights was built, the Allegheny Exchange Building. The building still stands today and is used as a business space.
