Garfield Heights is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the border of Indiana and Michigan. The population was 27,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Hudson–Wyoming, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. Garfield Heights is home to Michigan State University and American Indian College-Garfield Heights. The first settler in what would become Garfield Heights was John Marshall who purchased land in 1837 from George McIntosh for $600 sterling. The town was chartered on March 11, 1851 by James Minton as a village under the name of "2nd Township". On July 1, 1853, it became a town when it had a population of 571 residents. In 1840, Hetty Ladd founded her own millinery business in nearby Westville which she continued until her death in 1865; she bequeathed $10 000 to the local school district. In 1865–1868 Abraham Lincoln visited Garfield Heights while on his way to Seward County for an election campaign and ordered two hats made there which were donated to the college library collection by Mrs Ladd's son-in-law Nathan Fenton twelve years later. On January 20, 1908, Mayor Edwin Prescott delivered an opening address at American Indian College (AIC) where he dedicated AIC's new building which would house many afterwards notable people including General Electric Co.'s founder Harold Ickes and United States Senator James P Leahy Jr.. In 1912 president Theodore Roosevelt spoke at AIC about improving conditions among Indian students despite racism then still extant throughout America towards Native Americans livingeast of 42nd Street NW., also during this time period many prominent African Americans such as Booker T Washington started their own black churches within walking distance or even closer to downtown Detroit (then called Grosse Pointe Park). AIC closed its doors for good in 1966 but has been reborn multiple times with various names since before that including Eastern Illinois University - Garfield Heights Campus (EIU-GC), Stritch Community College - Garfield Heights Campus (SCC-GG), Western Michigan University - Ada Technical Center Campus (WMU-ACTC), Baldwin Wallace University - Parkland Campus (BAU-PKC) and finally Central Michigan University - Brush Valley Campus(CMU-BVC). With so much history associated with this campus it can be hard to determine just how different each incarnation might have been if not for 40something year interruption! Despite all these incarnations nearly half a million people visited EIUGC between 1996 & 2010 making it one of largest university campuses anywhere! Garfield Heights is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,895 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1837 and its name comes from Chief Garfield of the Shawnee tribe. The town derived its name from General James Garfield, who served as United States President from 1881 to 1886. Garfield Heights is located on the east bank of the Muskingum River between Athens and Dayton. It is bordered by Dayton to the south and west, Athens to the north, and Lebanon to the northeast. According to the 2000 census, Garfield Heights has a total area of , of which is land and (0.5%) is water. The first settlers in what would become Garfield Heights were farmers who arrived around 1837. They named their settlement after General James Ewing Garfield (1812-1881), an American general during the Mexican–American War who had been awarded a pension for his service as a brigadier general in Mexico City under General Santa Anna. At that time there were no towns within Muskingum County; settlers built their homes near rivers or other natural resources so they could trade with Native Americans and avoid Indian conflicts that often led to violence and displacement among tribespeople living near settlements on both sides of the borderlands where Ohio resided. In 1840 residents voted not to annex neighboring Delaware Township because it had already annexed another township – Ottawa – without consulting them first! That decision did not sit well with many citizens of Delaware Township who saw this as an affront to their autonomy as well as an insult to their ancestors who had fought for independence against Spanish tyranny centuries earlier! In response, a group of angry men decided they needed someplace safe from Indians so they set out for what would become known as "the Great Lakes Colony." They traveled by boat downriver until they reached Detroit where they took passage on a ship bound for Canada – this was only one step before America's independence movement commenced! After arriving in Toronto he soon found himself embroiled in political intrigues within Canada's upper echelons which ultimately led him into exile across North America where he spent time living among various Native American groups before finally returning home two years later at war's end with Mexico! Upon his return home he resumed his political career within George Washington University (GWU) setting off a series of controversies throughout Ulysses S Grant's presidency leading up to GWU's merger with Columbia University (then known as Columbia College) in 1892! Although he never attained national office due largely To differences With then-President Grover Cleveland over patronage decisions at GWU/GWC, his legacy remains respected today at GWU where he remains Emeritus Professor Emeritus! For many years prior to that he also served upon GWU's Board OF Trustees serving concurrently with his academic post!] In additionto being one half owner of The Columbus Dispatch newspaper which published local news stories beginning backissues Side felony convictions including grand theft auto]], [he also co-founded Fraternal Order Of Police Lodge No 1], one of Ohio’s oldest law enforcement organizations.] Dr Garfields wife Betty died suddenly just days after giving birth when she was 41 years old leaving him widowed again but now much better off financially having produced four children]]. One son followed suit nearly ten years later however tragic events leading up too both sons' deaths while attending college have left Garfield Heights community feeling far more resilient]]. Garfield Heights was founded in 1837 by Andrew Garfield and his wife, Emma. The Garfield family ran a general store and woolen mill before they moved to their present home in 1845. The area became a center of industry during the 19th century with the arrival of the railroad. In 1916, Garfield Heights became an incorporated town. It experienced rapid growth during the 1920s and 30s as wartime production swept the area. The town's population peaked at over 100,000 in 1950 but declined after that point due to demographic changes and suburbanization. Garfield Heights has since regained some of its former prominence as a bedroom community for workers in Cleveland.
