Garfield Heights is a town in Scioto County, Ohio, United States. The population was 4,898 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1836 by General David Dixon and named for General Nathan Bedford Forrest. The first store in Garfield Heights opened on Main Street in 1838. A post office was established in 1840, and the name changed to Garfield Heights in 1846. The town has been home to a number of ammunition manufacturing facilities over the years. In 1916, a munitions plant was built on State Route 224 northwest of the town center by J.H. Patterson & Sons Company; it produced high-grit projectiles for use with artillery and machine guns until its closure in 1984. Another munitions plant was built on State Route 224 east of Garfield Heights between 1951 and 1957 by Armstrong Whitworth Corporation; it manufactured armor-piercing rounds for use with artillery and other weapons until its closure also in 1984. In 1959, Armour Ammunition Company opened a small ammo shop near downtown that became one of the largest firearms dealerships in the United States when it merged with Brownells Corporation; it remains an active dealer today. In addition to its role as an prodigious arms producer, Garfield Heights has long been known for its wide variety of food products related to military or police duty: among these are chili dogs (served hot or cold), popcorn (mixed with salt or officers' coffee), macaroni salad (a popular dish served during Armed Forces Week), cigarettes (including filter cigars), beer, candy bars, Slurpee cups, and more!

Garfield Heights is named after American humorist and cartoonist Garfield (1895-1984). The first settlement in what is now Garfield Heights was founded by John Dickson in 1812 as a small trading post on the Scioto River. By 1830, it had become an agricultural community with livestock, fruit trees, and mills producing flour, rice, soap and other products for local markets. In 1837, John Funk built the first grist mill in what is now Garfield Heights while serving as its banker and justice of the peace; he also developed land east of present day Elmira Avenue to house his milling buildings and started to market his products there. In 1864, General George Armstrong Custer's army reached Euclid Avenue where they stopped before reaching Cleveland; Jerome Hennepin County was formed from portions of Ohio Territory following the battle site's discovery (). The new county seat was established at Arlington Heights (now University Circle), but most residents continued to live in town until 1890 when annexation by Cincinnati gave rise to a growing suburban sprawl around Elmira Avenue that continues today. In 1909–10 – during one of America's great urban renewal efforts – Mayor David Levy ordered construction of several blocks south of Elmira Avenue between Shelby Street and Wabash Avenue into which much needed housing could be dumped due to high demand for new development near downtown Cincinnati during this period (). This project became known as "Downtown". With only two blocks remaining original Downtown remained largely intact through much of the 1990s thanks to some restoration by city officials led by then-mayor Don Ryan (), who doubled as president pro tempore of the United States Senate at that time (). After years impacted by economic recession that began in late 2008 (), downtown has seen renewed interest with plans underway for a mixed use/residential redevelopment called "Garfield Green" () surrounding parkland once occupied by Bellefontaine Cemetery (); this project faces many challenges including opposition from nearby homeowners who fear gentrification along with loss of their historic homes
