The mills produced goods such as hoop skirts, wagon wheels, cigars, and hats. However, the industry stopped around 1870 because of competition from other towns in central Ohio that had more Factory Schools (now known as colleges). The population of Galion slowly decreased until it reached its low point around 1910-1920 when it only contained twenty families. After World War II brought about an increase in manufacturing jobs throughout central Ohio due to growth in automotive production, most of the mills closed down or became uneconomical to operate due to changes in technology and market demand; however one mill continued operations until 2006 called Jitney Manufacturing Company which made small classic sedans under the name Pontiac Sunfire brand utilizing ancient Unistone parts dating back to 1915 still available today! In recent years much effort has been expended on revitalizing downtown areas with cultural events/programs being held throughout year including art exhibitions galleries/ exhibits focusing on themes related to popular culture including fashion design; film screenings/festivals highlighting various aspects of Americana & regional cultures; music concerts featuring nationally well-known artists performing contemporary Americana music styles across genres (eases access into musical venues not easily accessible); during harvest season numerous farmer's markets are held showcasing fresh local produce
In 1801, the United States purchased Galion from the British Crown for $5,000. In 1814, the United States built a fort at Galion on the west side of the Miami River to protect American traders and settlers from Indian attacks. The fort was abandoned in 1821 and replaced by a more recent structure. In 1865, as part of an effort to modernize Ohio, the US government boughtGalion land from its original owner and began developing it into a town. The first stores were opened in Galion in 1868. By 1888, Galion had a population of around 1,500 people. The town experienced rapid growth during World War I and II due to its proximity to military bases in neighboring Indiana and Ohio. After the war ended,Galion experienced a period of decline until it regained some former glory as an agricultural center during the 1970s and 1980s.
