Galion, Ohio is a small town of about 9,000 residents in the northwestern corner of Stark County. The area around Galion was once a part of the Shawnee Nation and was known for its hardwood lumber industry. In 1834, John Ransom founded the city of Galion on land he had purchased from the Shawnee. The city was named after General Andrew Jackson’s home state of Georgia. Over time, other businesses have affiliations with Galion, such as Ford Motor Company and United States Rubber Corporation. The first gun case made inGalion was probably made by Nicholas-Jacques Eberhard in 1827. This gun case is currently on display at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio. A water-sealed muzzleloader rifle called the “Musketeer” was designed by George Armstrong Custer during his time as a scout with the Seventh Cavalry Regiment during the Indian Wars (1890-1896). After his death at Little Bighorn on July 15, 1890, Custer's body became famous due to his Medal Of Honor which he received for leading that engagement. This rifle is also known as "Custer's Rifle" or "Armstrong's Rifle." In 1902, Hennepin Arms Company started manufacturing shotguns in Galion. That company continues to exists today as Hennepin Arms Incorporated located in Shaker Heights, OH., across from Greater Cleveland Clinic and just east of I-71 exit 25B off Route 22 southbound into Cleveland Township

Galion, Ohio is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. The name comes from the Celtic word "gall," meaning "a large piece of land." Galion was one of five towns that formed the Galion Township in 1796. The first settler in what is now Galion was Amos Cline and his family in 1799. They built a cabin on a hill near present-day Market Street and built a log cabin using axe, saw, hammer, nails and other primitive tools to provide them with shelter and food for their families during winter months. In 1811, James Hensarling bought three shares of land from John Prentice for $5 per acre and began to farm it. He named his new farmstead after General George Washington because he admired him as a military leader and patriot. In 1814, when William Mudge sold his interest in Hensarling's farm to John Atherton for $10 per acre, Atherton developed an agricultural market that led to the growth of industry in what is now Galion township - first corn mills (1815), then lead mines (1821), then breweries (1828). By 1830 there were more than 20 businesses operating in what is now Galion township including four banks - the First National Bank (founded 1829), Second National Bank (founded 1830), United States Trust Company (founded 1830) and Templeman & Co., Manufacturer's Warehouse No 2 (opened November 3, 1830). In 1831 local citizens raised money to purchase 640 acres of land east of present-day West Side Highway from Niemen & Payne for $24 peracre; this area became known as Parkland Township which still includes part of town center today. The first school building was erected on this site by Reverend John Dutton in 1828; it was used until 1850 when it was replaced by a new schoolhouse which still stands today on North Main Street just north of present-day Parkland Square off Whitehall Road. That same year also saw the opening of Ohio's first brewery - The Brewery nearpresent day Market Street - which later became known as The White Horse Brewery . In 1840 Union troops burned down part of Fort Pittsville while occupying neighboring Delaware County; this event helped spur development around that fortification by creating jobs rebuilding Partick’s Mill located on high ground across US 41 from where artillery firing could be observed without being hit during peacetime operations against Confederate forces under General Robert E Hoke In 1861 Union soldiers burned down Fort Pittsville again while occupying nearby Delaware County while besieging Columbus; this event helped spur development around that fortification by creating jobs rebuilding Partick’s Mill located on high ground across US 41 from where artillery firing could be observed without being hit during peacetime operations against Confederate forces under General Robert E Hoke In 1915 parkland west side highway between whitehall road n south main street rd opened
In 1847, the area that is now Galion was part of the Northwest Territory. The United States purchased it from the indigenous people in 1851. In 1863, Galion became a town and was renamed after its founder, George Washington Gale. It grew rapidly due to its location near the new Toledo-Canton Railroad and other industry. By 1900, it had 591 residents and was within the Ohio Turnpike beltway. However, during World War I, Gale's factory produced munitions for the war effort, which caused a decline in population and business. After the war ended in 1918, Gale returned to his original business focus but saw his town gradually lose its importance as more manufacturing moved to larger towns in central Ohio. In 1959, Gale died at age ninety-six and his town reverted back to its original name of Galion. Today it has a population of around 1,000 people and continues to grow thanks to its location within easy reach of major metropolitan areas such as Toledo and Columbus.
