Galion is a town in Hamilton County, Ohio, United States. The population was 7,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Middletown–Beacon Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Galion area was first settled by German immigrants in 1797. In 1815, John Paulding founded the village of Galion on land that he had purchased from the heirs of Samuel Denny. The settlement grew rapidly and by 1828 it included a school, post office, Baptist church, Masonic lodge and two stores. A sawmill and grist mill were built in 1829 and 1830 respectively; both remain in operation today. In 1840, George Wrigley organized the Galion Township Association and made it his goal to stimulate agricultural production so that more goods could be sold to market. He named his new township after General Andrew Jackson (1st US President). In 1814, fur trader and explorer George Washington landing on the Great Lakes discovered what he thought was an uninhabited island northwest of present-day Galion. He named it "Hudson's Island." In 1826, John Marshall landed on Hudson's Island after reaching it from Toronto by way of the Georgian Bay Trail. He built a cabin there and named it for himself. In 1827, US President James K. Polk sent Captain David Dixon to explore what he believed were two more islands off the Michigan coast which he called "Island No. 3" and "Island No." Dixon found no indications that these were any other islands but decided to give Hudson's Island its current name instead of confusingly naming them all after different individuals or organizations who had discovered them. In 1830s and 1840s many people from northwestern Ohio settled in Galion because of plentiful natural resources such as coal and oil near Cleveland; Galion became one of the largest coal mining areas in America. The first post office was established in 1836 in present-day Galion by Jens Ludwig Spreckelsmeier (1805-83).
