Galion is a small town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 6,526 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Holland Township Public School District. Galion is located on the west bank of the Ottawa River just south of its confluence with the Kawkawaddy River. The first settler in Galion was Daniel Barnes who arrived in 1825 from England and erected a log cabin on what is now Main Street. The first post office was established in 1829 and was called "Barnesville". In 1843, John Hammond settled here and named it after himself. By 1850, there were six settlers living here and there were only two buildings remaining on Main Street when the community became an village under a new charter granted by the state of Michigan in 1865. In 1870, residents voted to change their name to "Galion." The town site had been chosen because it lay between two forks of the Ottawa River which made for easy access to both water supplies and tax base. galion incorporated as a village on November 14th, 1870; all businesses were conducted through Village Hall until annexation by Grand Rapids in 1916. TheVillage had three schools: Mrs Ephraim's school (1872-76), Mr Crouch's school (1877-79) and Henry Burt's school (1880-82).
