The Galion Rifle and Pistol Club was chartered on December 12, 1892. The club had two goals: to provide a place for shooting and to promote the interests of Galion County residents. At its first meeting, the club elected George W. Gibson president and Ralph B. Denton secretary-treasurer. The club purchased its first rifle in 1894 and began using it for target practice at local yards. In 1896, the club established a magazine to publish Gunnery Magazine in order to promote muzzleloader shooting and other outdoor activities inGalion County. In 1903, the Galion Rifle & Pistol Club reorganized as an all-volunteer organization with a board of directors chaired by J.W. Stephenson (then treasurer). On May 3, 1907, the Galion Rifle & Pistol Club merged with the Toledo Rifle & Pistol Club to form the Toledo Rifles & Pistols Association (TROPA). TROPA’s goal was to keep track of pistol calibers being used in Ohio and make recommendations on new calibers for use in the state; this helped lead to modern handgun design techniques that are still used today. In 1916, TROPA changed its name to the American Legion because World War I had caused gun control laws throughout America to change; now firearms were considered military equipment instead of personal items like clothing or jewelry allowable under civilian law. On November 9th 1921 TROPA voted unanimously to request recognition from Congress as an organized national society authorized by 2 U S Code Sec 711(a)(2) which stated “the purpose is not simply professional hunting but also educational purposes connected therewith” . As part of their application process they met with representatives from several states including Ohio where they were recognized on January 10th 1922.. The land that is now known as Galion was first settled by the Shawnee in the late 1700s. The area became a part of the United States of America during the Revolutionary War, and later became a part of Ohio. The town of Galion was founded on May 25, 1814, by General David Ritchie and his troops as they advanced into present-day Indiana Territory to pursue Indian fighters. After defeating the Indians at Battle of Fallen Timbers, Ritchie named the town for General James Wilkinson, who had fought in that battle.Galion experienced significant growth during its early years, with many settlers coming to take advantage of its fertile soil and strong agricultural industry. In 1832, Galion was renamed for George Washington Carver, one of America's most famous agriculturalists. Over time, however, Galion's economy began to decline as waves of immigration replaced native-born residents with European-American settlers. This trend continued until World War II when Galion become an important center for manufacturing in Northwest Ohio.During the war period, some aspects of local life were changed forever when munitions plant workers from Middletown (now Dayton) produced shells used in both the American Civil War and World War I. As a result of this production activity and other wartime activities such as building military barracks and providing food for soldiers overseas, Galion came to be known as "the Arsenal City." However, after the war ended there was little demand for manufactured goods here since much production had been moved toMiddletown or elsewhere in Northwest Ohio due to technological advancements and increased competition from abroad. Today, although cultural features reminiscent of nineteenth century life are still evident - such as horsedrawn carriages called "cabs" - overall conditions have improved somewhat over these past several decades; nevertheless aspects such as high unemployment rates persist which can leave individuals feeling hopelessly strapped financially.
