Galion, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Perry County. The population was 8,730 at the 2010 census, making it the fastest-growing city in Ohio. As of 2019, Galion had an estimated population growth rate of 10%. The name "Galion" is thought to be derived from the Potawatomi word go-li-a (meaning "place where they hunt"). The first settlement in what is now Perry County was made by fur traders on the Scioto River in 1795. The town of Galion was founded by James Ketchum on land granted him by the Shawnee leader Major Ridgely in 1825. In 1828, General David Steuben established a Military Post at Galion with twenty soldiers under his command to keep watch over trade along the Scioto River. The post served as a center for education and culture for many years until it closed its doors in 1903 due to budget cuts. In 1857, Congress passed an act naming Perry County after General William Tecumseh Sherman because he had helped lead Union troops intoOhio during the American Civil War. In 1861, when Confederate forces invaded Kentucky, Galion became one of several towns located near Cincinnati that unconditionally supported Confederate efforts to resist federal forces. After battle damage forced most businesses to close early that year, local citizens gathered around their kitchen fires to cook food while waiting for reinforcements that never arrived. By late 1862 all but one store had reopened; however fire destroyed much of downtown Galion before Union forces could arrive and attack from behind; resulting in widespread looting throughout Cincinnati and surrounding counties which continued until 1865 when Union troops retreated from Kentucky without achieving any meaningful objectives.. In 1865 galions finally regained their lost commerce thanks largely to volunteer firefighters who fought pitched battles against burning buildings across town while residentslooked on.. Galion was laid out by John Allen and others in 1811 as "Township of Delaware". The first post office was established in 1814. The name derived from the Susquehanna River. The local economy has been based on agriculture since before white settlers arrived in what is now Galion Township. Some early industries included tanning and manufacturing of goods for local markets. A sawmill operated near present day Galion until 1900 when it closed because of competition from larger mills operating in other parts of Ohio. In 1907, a railroad station was built on the former alignment of the Erie Railroad and continues to serve today as a stop for passengers traveling between Cleveland and Akron; this made Galion an important transportation hub during that time period A primary industry through which Galion has supported its residents over the years has been tourism which includes both educational tours led by community members or volunteers as well as general admission offerings such as museums, galleries, hiking trails, nightlife venues and more In recent years there have been efforts to revive some dormant businesses within the town including an arts center opened up by donations from donors in 2013, a new park opened up by private donations in 2016 and plans are underway to build another arts center should successful fundraising efforts be brought about
