At first most people just used their initials or other short forms for their townships (e.g., Granger's Landing), but eventually they started using full name beginning with their first initial letters (Grangerstown). The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Galion, Ohio were French explorer Jacques Marquette and his partner, Pierre-Jean La Salle. They explored the area in 1796 and named it for Jean Baptiste Laboure, Sieur de La Salle. The area was part of the Northwest Territory that France ceded to the United States in 1805. In 1814, General Anthony Wayne founded the town of Gallon on the Scioto River near present day Galion. The town was named after General Wayne's father-in-law, James Galloway. In 1835, a post office was established at Gallon and it remained in operation until 1907. A logging company known as the Atlantic & Ohio Railroad reached Galion in 1892 and began operations there. The company became part of American National Railway in 1912. A hotel called The White Sands was built at Gallon around 1915 and remained In business until 1951.
