In 1850, Galion became an unincorporated village and began to grow as a commercial center. By 1870, it had become a city with a population of over 500 people. In 1895, Galion passed an ordinance allowing handguns to be carried openly within its limits. This was followed by other gun regulations in 1897 and 1899. In 1906, Galion became one of the first cities in Ohio to adopt Prohibition (a measure approved by voters). during World War II, Galion played an important role as both an air-raiding base and military supply depot. It also served as headquarters for the First Army Air Forces during World War II and 1943-1945. The city declined in population after World War II but has continued to grow economically since then with spirited growth in commerce and industry including many high-tech startups that have arisen throughout recent decades such as VR/AR company called Oculus Rift & Gear VR manufacturer HTC Vive
Galion is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Galion ZIP Code is 44017. The name "Galion" was derived from the Shawnee word "kalua." This word means "fortress" or "hillock." In 1812, General Arthur Sturgis and his army invaded Canada and arrived in what would become Galion on November 15th. He ordered his men to build Fort Sturgis on the banks of the Great Miami River. Colonel John Clift built a log cabin near where Galion now stands as a tribute to General Sturgis. In 1814, when Ohio became a United States territory, Fort Sturgis was renamed Fort Erie and remained in use until it was destroyed by Union forces during the American Civil War on April 12, 1865. The town of Galion developed around this post office which opened in 1828 and served as an important transportation hub for settlers moving westward into Muskingum County. By 1830, there were over 100 residents living in what is now downtown Galion. The first store building was erected on West Third Street in 1830 and lasted until 1840 when it burned down due to an accident caused by faulty wiring inside the building! A new store building named after President James Kenedy (1807-1868) replaced it between 1840-1848; it also housed the first schoolhouse in town! In 1849-50, another new store building was erected on East Fourth Street which continued to serve as headquarters until 1861 when all commercial businesses moved out of downtown because of increasing competition from Cleveland’s growing industrial sector! In 1865-66 two more stores were added to downtown with additional business space being rented out for agricultural purposes; these buildings still stand today (although they are not used commercially). At this time most of western Muskingum County had already been annexed by Cleveland so that Fort Erie no longer had any real significance outside of local history! In 1870 only two years beforeGalion's incorporation as a village resulted from an act by Muskingum County commissioners authorizing its creation; one house remained standing on Market Square throughout its tenure! A courthouse also soon followed suit and functioned intermittently throughout its early years until finally completed in 1874; this structure still stands today at 601 Elmira Road across from Village Hall! After years consisting mostly of small businesses serving primarily rural residents galions center began to rapidly grow with apartment construction taking off during World War II while other industries such as light manufacturing slowly declined throughout much of the late 20th century However recent residential developments have brought some back into use especially Village Hall which once again houses many cultural events each year including music concerts/festivals etc... Some estimates place current population at 7500 making Galion one of Ohio's fastest growing communities While some feel that this growth may be unsustainable given present resources Urgent action needs to be taken regarding housing affordability & job opportunities particularly within rural areas
