Galion is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton, OH-KY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Galion post office has been in operation since 1837. The area now known as Galion was first settled by Germans in 1795 and named after Friedrich Wilhelm Von Gálius, an ancestor of George Washington. On March 16, 1800, the town was organized from parts of Mansfield Township and Clermont Township. In 1837, it incorporated as a village under the name of Postville. By 1850 it had reached its present size with a population of 2,000 people. In 1865Galion became one of three townships within Muskingum County which were to be formed into the new county when Muskingum County was created from portions of Stark and Medina counties; however this plan never came to fruition because no land was available for settlement within Muskingum County limits (the others being Findlay and Wooster). As a result, on January 1st 1870 Galion amalgamated with neighboring Postville to form what is now called Postville Township again with a population of 3,500 residents (1 more than before). Galion was founded in 1830 by John Galison and his family. The area that is now Galion was part of the Northwest Territory, which precursor to Ohio. In 1835, the Galison family sold their land to the government for $3,000. The new government established a town called Galion on the west side of the river as a stop on the Erie Canal. The town grew quickly and by 1840 had a population of 100 people. In 1845, Galion became an incorporated village and in 1865 it became a city.
