James Kapp's grandson John Dennison patented 2,500 acres (1 km2) around what is now downtown Gahannan in 1825 which became the limits for township creation within Washtenaw County until 1827 when that township was divided into two parts: one with portions included in Decatur Township east of Middlebrooks Creek and one with those portion's located west of Middlebrooks Creek forming what are now Defiance Township and unincorporated areas within today's cities of Dayton and Middletown The village had a schoolhouse for grades 1-4 as well as an African Methodist Episcopal church built in 1868; however it closed within one year due to lack of funds In 1879 Wm Henson donated land south of Main Street between Springdale Boulevard and West Third Street to form what would become Penn Central Railroad’s mainline depot yards before construction started on tracks extending northwest from there across East Side Road to Chillicothe Junction on March 20th 1880 Gahnwanen School opened November 3rd 1888 with 11 students tuition free In 1889 David Hecht donated land along Clinton Avenue between High Street/Broadway & Elmira Avenue/Clinton Grove Road/Lincoln Highway to become High School Campus
