Gahanna, Ohio is a small city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Summit County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 17,571. Gahanna was founded by German immigrants in 1810 as a community on the Scioto River near what is now downtown Akron. The name "Gahanna" means "place where Christianity began." The first mill in town was built by Nicholas Coyle in 1824. Gahanna's rich iron ore deposits made it an important center for manufacturing during the early 19th century. In 1868, Gahanna became part of the newly formed United States following its purchase from Great Britain by the United States government; it had been part of Canada since Confederation in 1867. In 1870, President Ulysses S Grant attended a meeting at which Gahanna's mayor recommended that it be annexed to Cleveland because of its proximity to other industrial centers and its ability to obtain affordable shipping lanes through Lake Erie. Although some residents objected to being annexed into Cleveland, others saw this as an opportunity to build a better future for their city and refused to leave behind their homes and businesses. By 1889, Steelton had replaced Gahana as Kingstown's leading commercial center due to increased steel production at nearby mills; however, steel production declined throughout most of America during World War II because demand for munitions skyrocketed after Pearl Harbor. Afterward, Gahanna regained some importance as a bedroom community for workers commuting into larger cities; however, until recently little attention has been given to its history or culture compared with those located farther west along Lake Erie or east along I- 480 highway. Despite its lack of major industry or tourism attractions save for two amusement park rides (the Geauga County Fairgrounds and Six Flags Over India), Gahannians are proud advocates of their hometown's traditions and heritage - such as traditional breadmaking techniques known as township breading or bakers' field baking - which have been passed down from generation to generation since they were first documented in print during Prohibition Era annals written by local journalists who wrote about life within prohibition-era towns like Canton (now Medina),Akron (now Akron) and Youngstown (now Warren). One notable tradition that continues today is quilting bees - although there has not been any active quilting bee activity taking place within town limits since 1978 - which are held annually on Saturday mornings beginning around 9am outside City Hall ending with auctions off items produced during the event Proceeds go towards local charities including Habitat For Humanity

In addition to its heavy manufacturing presence throughout much of the 20th century, Gahanna has become a major arts and entertainment destination thanks to its location close to Case Western Reserve University and other cultural attractions.
