Gahanna, Ohio is a city in the United States located in central Ohio. The population was 11,332 at the 2010 census. Gahanna was founded by the brothers Elijah and Joseph Smith on October 25, 1814 as an agricultural community named for Gideon Welles Gage. The name originated from a haunt of the Indian Chief Gahana which was located near what is now downtown Gahanna. The town began as a small village on the Scioto River with a population of around 100 people in 1814. In 1825, Gahanna became part of Columbiana County, and then in 1827 it became part of Lucas County. The city's first mayor was George Hinkle III and its first recorder was James Prentice. The American Civil War began on April 14, 1861 and ended May 4th 1865 when Union General Ulysses S Grant took control of Columbus from Confederate General Robert Ewell Burnside. In 1870, Gahanna had a population of 578 residents and by 1880 it had grown to 1,691 residents. On July 8th 1898 Wm J Matson organized a group called "The Knights Templars" to resist railroad consolidation plans made by Samuel Inslee during his administration as Governor of Washington Territory - this led to an event that is sometimes considered to be the beginning of modern Cincinnati metropolitan area growth: streetcar service between Cincinnati and Gahanni started on September 16th 1998 after months long planning by Matson's group spearheaded by Mayor Rich Brown (D). At that time there were only two other cities within fifty miles (80 km) of Cincinnati proper: Dayton and Cleveland . Growth continued apace during Inslee's tenure with annexations from Lawrence Township (1901), Westwood Heights Township (1920), Northwood Heights Township (1924), Shadyside Heights Borough (1929) before finally becoming annexed into the city limits on December 1st 1933 – making Gahanna one full municipality with jurisdiction over all but four blocks inside its limits! During World War II much activity took place within Greater Cincinnati due to military recruitment drives; such activities included manufacturing war materiel at Bowling Green Army Ammunition Plant #1 & 2; aluminum production at Chandler Aircraft Co.; shipbuilding at Huntington Shipyard #3; printing press operations at Lake Erie News Company & Western Reserve Newspaper Company; research laboratories operated out of University Hospital in Cincinnati; coalmining operations at Maple Ridge Mines Ltd.; aircraft manufacturing plants at Whitaker-Marriott Airport & Warren-Thrasher AFB #2 both producing B-17 Flying Fortress bombers while Fairchild Air Force Base produced P-38 Lightning fighters for USAAF use; Bethlehem Steel Corporation built several factories including Bessemer Armor Works & Lorraine Iron Foundry until their closure in 1984….. economic recovery following world recession saw numerous new businesses open up including medical diagnostics company Geisinger HealthCare Center (#1shares highest paid employee per capita among major healthcare providers); trucking firm IH Group Inc., real estate development company Onexim Properties LLC., steel fabrication company Stonington Metals Inc., computer services provider CSC Technologies Incorporated…………………. Today’s skyline can be seen throughout most of Greater Cincinnati……… churches continue play an important role within many communities throughout Greater Cincinnati….. baseball has become very popular here with teams such as Great Lakes Loons (.879 ERA Top 10 TEAMS 2016) playing in various leagues across America……………………………………….
On November 3, 1803, the first post office in Gahanna was established. The town was named for John Gahanna, a Revolutionary War veteran and member of the Ohio General Assembly.
