When Ohio became a state in 1803, its population was only around 10,000. The vast majority of the people lived on the Indian reservations and there were no roads or towns. Thus, it was not until the early 1800s that gun sights began to be developed in Ohio. In 1795, Colonel John Stark founded Stark's rifle factory in Gahanna and began producing rifles for the United States military. At first, these guns were used by Indian warriors to terrorize their enemies. However, as technology improved and more firearms were produced, it became clear that artillery could also be shot with these weapons. This change led to the development of iron sights which allowed shooters to target specific areas on enemy targets without having to constantly move their arms around. In 1868, James Atherton organized what would become known as The Alma Mater Society which supported higher education within local communities throughout Ohio through scholarships and other forms of support while encouraging schoolsponsored learning functions such as debating tournaments and recitation contests among students from all over the state. This group later changed their name to The Ohio State University Foundation which continues its philanthropic mission today. In 1888, THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY BEACH CAMPUS opened on Sandusky Bayou adjacent to then US Naval Base Perry Barr where undergraduate students now attend classes each day during summer term while deployed aboard USS " Perry Barr ". During World War II manybombing raids took place near or inside of town including one that killed 20 people on October 15th 1945 .
