Gahanna, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Summit County. The population was estimated at 97,579 as of 2019. Gahanna is located on the Scioto River in central Ohio, about 20 miles west of Cleveland and 30 miles east of Cincinnati. The area now known as Gahanna was first inhabited by the Seneca people who called it 'Ninga' or 'New Village'. The land that would later become Gahanna was part of the Northwest Territory under British rule before becoming part of the United States following its independence from Great Britain in 1802. In 1803, General Anthony Wayne's forces destroyed a Iroquois village located within what is now Gahanna after they had captured several hundred warriors during their invasion of Canada. This event is considered to be one of the decisive battles in American history and helped solidify U.S.-Canadian relations for years to come. The town began to grow rapidly due to this new development and by 1825 it had reached its present size with a population of over 7,000 people. Gahanna, Ohio is a town located in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 41,527 at the 2010 census. Gahanna is included in the Cincinnati metropolitan area. It is part of the Dayton–Middletown, OH–KY Metropolitan Statistical Area. Gahanna is one of several communities in central Ohio that were founded by Revolutionary War veterans who returned home to rural areas following the war. In 1811, Gahanna's first settler, Captain John Pritchard, and his family established a farm on what is now Main Street. Other early settlers included James Fenton and Samuel Gridley Jr.. The town was named for General George Washington's birthplace on Mount Vernon Island in Virginia; Gahanna was founded just east of where Washington had lived until he moved to Philadelphia in 1799 to become president of Pennsylvania. The original village—now known as North Gahanna—was laid out around a small schoolhouse and garage built by Captains Pritchard and Gridley between 1811 and 1813; it consisted only of two houses and a barns/storage building now occupied by First National Bank Tower on Center Street (then called Meridian). In 1814, when Dearborn County was organized from parts of Hamilton County, Gahanna became part of that county; its first sheriff was Abram Sibley Storey (1802-1878). By 1850, however, most residents had fled en masse to opportunities far away from central Ohio because agricultural productivity there had declined so much since goods brought back during the American Revolution had been consumed or exported to other countriesMWF: "The decline in agriculture throughout central Ohio due largely to introduced new diseases such asrailroad travel did not escape notice developmental planners either during or after the founding of Cleveland". Gahanna was founded in 1775 by the Ohio Company, a group of British Loyalists who were looking for a place to establish themselves after being driven out of Pennsylvania. The company named their new town after General George Washington, who had helped lead the Continental Army during the American Revolution. Gahanna quickly became a key center of trade and culture in central Ohio. In 1813, Gahanna was made the county seat of Bucyrus County and it remained that way until 1827 when it was moved to Griggsville. In 1828, Gahanna voters elected James Muhlenberg as the first U.S. Senator from Ohio.
