The city's economic foundation can be traced back to 1814 when General David Hoyt established Fort Wayne's garrison here after fighting in the War for Independence against British forces stationed in Canada. soon after Battle Creek was formed as a village east-northeast of Gahanna by early 1800s settlers who were driven out of Battle Creek by Native Americans In 1825 US Senator James Kuklick sponsored legislation creating State University at Canton which moved to Gahanna in 1830 That same year Gahanna merchants founded The Gazette which served as an evening paper until1868 In 1840 United States Congressman John Ayscough represented this area before moving to LimaOhio where he continued his political career By 1850 there were 300 businesses in Gahannan alone including 25 cotton factories Additionally freight traffic brought goods such as lumber, flour and hardware into town along two major roadways: Canfield Road (now I-70) running northwest/southeast from downtown via what is now Old Warsaw Road (now Erie Rd) to southeast via Aspinwall Street then north along Aspinwall Street past today’s Arena Mall before turning east again onto Canfield Road where it crossed Clinton Avenue South for about three miles thence becoming Orchard street continuing northeast on Clinton Avenue until reaching Harper Ferry where it united with Lake Erie Railroad
The township of Gahanna was organized in 1824. The first settler in the township, David Fenton, arrived in 1825. By 1830, there were six families living in Gahanna Township. The first school was built in 1828 and was part of the village of Gahanna. In 1830, a post office called Gahanna was established and served until 1837 when it moved to Wooster. In 1840, a new school building was erected on the corner of Third and State Streets and served until 1865 when it burned down. A new school building was constructed on Third Street between First and Second Streets in 1870-71 serve as the town's official schoolhouse until 1975-76 when it burned down again. In 1903, a railroad station named after General George Washington opened at the corner of Third and State Streets which served as an administrative center for the township until its closure in 1984.
