Gahanna is a city in Hamilton County, Ohio, United States. The population was 33,471 at the 2010 census. Gahanna is the largest city in the county and second-largest city in Hamilton County by population. The area that later became Gahanna was first settled by George Washington and his followers during the winter of 1792–93 as they made their way back from Yorktown after successful campaigns against British forces. In 1814, General William Halleck moved his army through the area and discovered rich coal seams near what would become Gahanna. By 1830, over 1000 people lived in Gahanna with a total assessed valuation of $1 million dollars (the equivalent of $ as of ). In 1836, when Ohio became a state, it annexed part of Cincinnati Township including Gahanna for use as its seat. The town's first Mayor was John A. Sibley and it held its first election on November 3rd of that year with James Wirtz as the winner over incumbent David Ritchie (a member of Cincinnati's Board Of Education). At this time there were only two hotels in town: The Overhead Room on High Street and The Star Tavern on College Street both run by Mrs. John Muhlenberg who also managed to keep up normal business operations despite being closed for several weeks due to snowstorm conditions which damaged many businesses throughout central Ohio early December 1836 The incorporation process for townships within Hamilton County began on January 1st 1837 but because Gahann had not yet filed an application it did not take effect until February 10th On July 6th 1840 James Wirtz died intestate leaving his son George Wirtz Jr., who already had married Anna Smith to succeed him as Mayor; however Anna refused to accept her father's deathbed gift so she continued to serve under her husband until March 14th when she resigned effective immediately due to health concerns related to yellow fever contracted while serving in Mexico City Anna Smith Wirtz then served continuously until 1893 when she retired from public service effective April 30th following her husband’s death at age 86 years old

However, over time they have regained some footing and continue to play a vital role in Ohio's economy today.
