In 1837-38 there were 9 brickyards in town employing eighty men; they were soon destroyed by fire from lack of water supply and heavy rains caused secondary flooding which ruined many homes and businesses; but Gahanna survived as an agricultural village with over 10 brickyards until 1850 when those operations ceased because transportation became available through roadways rather than through local waterways or reliance on boats for goods transported across large distances In 1840–41 there was an unsuccessful effort to build a lock system connecting Lake Erie with Danville Feeder Canal leading into Great Lakes – this project was considered so important that debate continued even after locks were built at Sandusky Falls near Toledo Gahanna’s first store opened in 1845 at what is now Third Avenue and High Street On October 2nd 1865 Gahanna joined Dayton as its second incorporated town . By 1870 it had reached its current size having grown from 1 square mile (0.6 km2) to 5 square miles (15 km2). In 1900 it had become part of Euclid County . It annexed unincorporated portions of Summit Township on February 11th 1906 . As its population grew began looking for more land to add onto their limited lots .
