Gahanna, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Hamilton County. The population was 21,824 at the 2010 census. Gahanna is located on the shore of Lake Erie and includes portions of both Gahanna Township and Mahoning Township. The city's boundaries were revised in 2008 to include all of Medina Township which forms its eastern border. The area that now makes up Gahanna was first settled by Native Americans in the 17th century as part of the Delaware Nation. In 1812, United States Captain James Kinsman claimed land east of present-day Gahanna for America through an official deed known as Treaty No. 8%. This land became part of Delaware County when it was organized as a county in 1813. In 1836, John Stephenson founded what would become Stephenson Steelworks on his tract west of today's downtown Gahanna, creating one of the largest steelmaking companies in America at that time. The Works continued operations until 1964 when it closed due to economic difficulties and competition from other steel plants around the country. However, Steelworkers still live within walking distance today and some continue to produce steel products including cans and bottle caps since 1919 out of their old works site on Wabash Avenue south of I-480 (now US 131). In 1907, local businessmen pooled money to build a new high school which opened its doors two years later than planned due to financial struggles among other local schools then under construction across town – Southeastern High School (later Cleveland State University), Stonington Elementary School (later Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Catholic Church), Euclid Intermediate School (later Lorain Community College) – all seeking government funding forruction costs over budget or beyond original projections because Toledo had annexed much territory into Cuyahoga County during those years leading up to Groundhog Day that year! The settlement grew rapidly due to its location on the Scioto River, which provided easy access to trade with other settlements in the area. By 1829, Gahanna had a population of over 100 people. The town's growth continued through the years, thanks in part to its position as a transportation hub for goods moving between Cincinnati and points farther north. In 1853, Gahanna became an incorporated village under the name of Athens. In 1907, however, it reverted back to its original name of Gahanna after being selected as one of six villages in Ohio designated as metropolitan areas by then-President Taft. After World War II ended, Gahanna enjoyed a period of rapid economic development that saw industries such as textiles and plastics become dominant. However, today there is little evidence remaining from early settler days; most importantly, there are no remains of any ancient brick or stone buildings dating back more than a century.
