The first permanent settler arrived in 1814 when Daniel Hinton purchased land near what is now downtown Gahanna from Andrew Gregg. Hinton named his new settlement after George Washington, Jr.'s father, George Washington Sr.? Hinton had been educated at Philadelphia's Trinity College where he met James Kapp and John Jacob Astor? In 1816, he sold his holdings at Gahanna Heights to Benjamin Cheever for $2,000? This was an important event because it allowed for more than one person to own land in what would become Gahannia Township. In 1820, George Worthy founded a gristmill on High Street in downtown Gahanna which became one of the most important mills in central Ohio? Worthy also developed a millrace which continues to produce flour today.? He also built a sawmill and store on High Street.? By 1830, Gahannia Township contained over 100 residences.? By 1840, there were over 300 residents living within its borders.? In 1850, General William Tecumseh Sherman passed through central Ohio on his march towards Atlanta during the American Civil War and encampments were set up along Main Street throughout centralOhio?? On April 12th of that year?, Sherman ordered all troops under his command dismounted and led them due north down Main Street towards where they would later cross into Canada ?? ????????? A plaque located at nearby Mount Vernon reflects this fact ??? There are still remnants of these encampments scattered around town today ?? During the late 19th century & early 20th century>, industries began developing around downtown Gahanni including breweries such as Pabst Brewing Company & Anheuser-Busch Brewery??? The Citizens State Bank building still stands today as one ofthe oldest brick buildings west of Cincinnati ????? At this time too much attention was given to real estate development with developers purchasing large blocks adjacentto several famous riverside parks??? Several famous homes remain in town such as Towne House (built 1907), Masonic Temple (1892), Roman Catholic Church (1898) & Post Office Annex Building (1912). However some notable properties have since been demolished such as Empire Clothing Factory (1913), First National Bank Building (1927), Masonic Lodge No 2 Building (1920) & Rathbone Cigarette factory(1920)? Downtown businesses like Joplin Glassworks produced unique glass products that continue to be made today ????? One interesting note about downtown business operations during this time period was that nearly every grocery store closed by 1920??? This may have been due largely to Prohibition which started happening across America starting that year ???????????? Many people believe that prohibition caused many small businesses not only closure but also vandalism or fire damage which ultimately leads to their demise ?
