By 1907 it had become one of America's leading manufacturing centres as breweries such as Pennsylvania Dutch Brewing Company (laterpackaged as Anheuser-Busch), American Brewery (later merged into Brown-Forman), J & L Wagon Wheel Manufacturing Company and others developed here including Flour Mill No 1 which still operates today making flour for breads, pastas and other food products; also Stoneware Factory closed in 1984 but reopened in 1990 as Broadway Pottery before selling back to Flour Mill No 1 again in 2006; also Checkerboard Factory opened here in 1901 as Tableware Manufacturing Co., later becoming Checkerboard Industries Inc.; finally Hometown Bake Shop closed down here around 1978 but reopened about 2002 as A&W Pizza Place before closing again about 2009; Finally Applebees restaurant opened up next door about 2005 although it has since closed down During World War II most of what are now Flour Mill No 1 buildings were used by US munitions manufacturers who built large artillery pieces such as 155 mm howitzers and shells from aluminum sheets that they chopped up into small pieces then fired using powder propellants like nitroglycerin or black powder In 1951/1952 when Koppers Drugs acquired what are now Katz's Delicatessen across First Avenue from Flour Mill No 1 these facilities produced cheese dip sandwiches which remain popular items at Katz's today
