Fremont's history dates back to at least 1793 when European settlers began to arrive in what is now Fremont Township (now Westmoreland County). On November 2 that year, James Ligon arrived with his family from Virginia and erected a cabin near present-day Union Avenue and Sheridan Road. By 1800, there were six households living in what would become Fremont Township along with one tavern that served travelers traveling through the area on their way to or from western Kentucky or eastern Tennessee (today’s Clermont County). In 1802, Joshua Henschel formed a partnership with Matthias Kappeisen to open a gristmill called “Henschel & Kappeisen Mill” west of present day Union Avenue/Sheridan Road; this mill continued production until 1865 when it was sold to John Marshall Brewing Company for $2 million dollars ($40 million today). The next year saw another early settler arrives – George Weiser – who purchased about sixty acres northwest of present day Market Street for $5 per acre ($160 per square mile) after learning about it from fur traders operating out of Fort Pittsburgh (present-day Pittsburgh). Weiser began building anLog Cabin Store here soon after purchase; this store operated until 1830 when it burned down due to weather conditions while also providing much needed shelter for local pioneer families during winter months.. After purchasing additional land northeast of Market Street (which would later become known as Weiser Park), George Washington Smith started construction on what would be Northern School House which opened December 10th 1833 serving grades 1-8th; this school closed approximately forty years later but left an important legacy behind as North School House still serves as both District 3 Elementary School across Second Street from downtown Cincinnati[1]
