Fremont, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Cuyahoga County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 95,075. Fremont was founded in 1811 as a fur trading post by Jedediah Smith and his party on the Great Lakes Shoreline. The region now comprising Fremont became part of Erie County following its creation in 1824. The first recorded mention of Fremont comes from a group of French traders who arrived in 1796 at Sackets Harbor on Lake Erie, then traveled upriver to what is now Fremont before turning back downstream and returning to Canada via Detroit in 1807. The area that would become Fremont was first inhabited by the Shawnee people during the mid-19th century; they were displaced by European settlers in large numbers after the American Revolution. A fur trader named John Day explored parts of present-day Fremont and Lawrence Township around 1800 while surveyor George Stephenson built an iron Works near present day Mentor between 1802 and 1804. In 1811, Jedediah Smith's party led by Captain Lewis Cass made landfall on Lake Erie at Sackets Harbor when their ship Discovery ran aground there for supplies on their journey from St Louis to Detroit (the only known commercial navigation operation on that body of water at that time). By 1800, most Native Americans living east of what is now Akron had been killed or driven away by English colonists or United States troops occupying Canada during this period called "The Time Of Her Exiles." One small band remaining resistance hovered around Fort Wayne until 1794 when British forces destroyed it with cannon fire after besieging it for several months while under orders from General Joseph Howe to crush any Indian resistance within reach along both sides of Lake Ontario—a venture later dubbed "Canada's Waterloo".
