Fremont is one of the oldest cities in modern-day Ohio and was founded on April 12, 1788 by Captain James Fenton and his soldiers during the French and Indian War. The original town site was near what is now downtown Fremont. The first permanent settler in Fremont was Captain James Fenton who arrived in 1788 from Wales with twenty men under his command to explore a new location for Ohio. On April 12,1788 they founded what would become Fremont on land that they had surveyed from where they stood watch that evening over a band of Indians led by chief Auxaheemuskee. This initial village grew quickly due to its strategic location at the junction of two major wagon routes thenceforth called "the Great Wagon Road" and "the Water Road". Fremont soon became an important center for transportation because it lay within easy reach of both Upper Sandusky Bayou and the forks of the Maumee River system which made ship travel difficult or impossible beyond Muskingum County eastward into Pennsylvania and downriver to Detroit through rapids controlled by Native Americans such as Shawnee leader Tecumseh. As early as 1802, when surveyors laid out much of present day Fremont on lots large enough for houses but too small for mills or other businesses, it can be inferred that trade with eastern United States must have been very important to early residents hereabouts; indeed, many items still passed through these boundaries today including flour products destined for Michigan's Upper Peninsula! Captain Fenton's son-in-law George Washington Smith (1793–1858) began a successful lumber business here which continued until 1890 when competition came from Eastern United States via railroads beginning operations nearby at Toledo (now Etna). By 1892 there were three sawmills operating in Fremont: one by Captain John Early (later elected mayor), another operated by William Kappeler ( afterwards clerk of courts), and finally Jno Matson’s establishment which remain today known as “Matson’s Sawmill #1” even though this structure no longer exists except as part of a series of buildings along Euclid Avenue north thereof erected between 1909-1910 by streetcar manufacturer Harry Chandler! downtown Fremont timeline: 1800 - Captain James Fenton arrives with 20 men seeking land grant neartoday's Downtown Fremont 1802 - First Lots are sold within current limits of downtown Fremonitself while surrounding areas only house 1 mill then 2 years later 3 more lots are developed including future Pioneer Square blocks north & west thereof c 1840 - 1st Store opens @ Main Street corner now US 36th St & Erie Ave NW also built mayoralty building 1880 - George Washington Smith begins lumber business southeast sideof main street w/ 3 floors commercial building 1892 - All 3 sawmills close except Jno Matson's operation built 1910 – Harry Chandler builds streetcar manufacturing complex across Euclid Ave.- Original Building still standing
