By 1822 local merchants had started developing what would become today's downtown with warehouses, churches and stores catering to travelers coming through the region on their way back west or north after exploring new land in Indiana or Canada during the Northwest Fur Company era (1747-1814). During his presidency (1829-30), James Knoebel helped develop one of America's earliest commercial airports - Wrightstown Airport - just south of downtown Fremont where he used surplus farm equipment donated by farmers in central Ohio to build what is now one of America's most popular tourist destinations for aviation enthusiasts not only because it offered easy access to some excellent flying conditions but also due to its unusual history which includes being both the birthplace world's first powered airplane flown without assistance from human power while also serving as a training ground for many future pioneers such as Wiley Post – father thereof famed aviator Charles Lindbergh – who first flew over Detroit using a powered airplane on April 6th 1903

During World War II, Fremont played an important role as a munitions manufacturing center due to its strategic location between Akron and Toledo along both the Middle East Pipeline and then later within Allied forces occupying Europe during World War II. After the war, many businesses left downtown following efforts by developers to redevelop what had been once an industrial heartland into walkable neighborhoods characterized by high-quality architecture and open space accessible from every direction
