Fremont was founded in 1814 by George Stephenson as a whiskey distillery. The distillery became a brewery in 1836, and a cotton gin in 1853. In 1907, the brewery merged with the Ohio Central Railroad to become the Cleveland-Fremont Railway. The railway was taken over by Conrail in 1968 and closed down in 1990.
