Fremont’s history began with early land seizures that led to its location on the Scioto River within present-day Portage County boundaries which would become part of Cleveland when Northwest Territory was organized into states following the American Revolutionary War Treaty of 1795 which ceded all lands east of Great Lakes to America The area that would be called Fremont today date back over one hundred years ago when fur traders such as Simon Cameron established posts along this stretch of riverine country connecting Upper Canada with points southward including what are now Miami, Michigan and Toledo, Ohio In 1812 John Cranch set up shop at what is now known as Broadway (now US Route 422)on what later became Cache Creek Road between Dayton and Portsmouth After struggles against powerful Native Americans throughout much of this period there were initial successes when British troops burned down Fort Mifflin near present day Greenville Heights on July 10th 1778 after trapping about 200 American settlers there ) This event helped spur development aroundCache Creek where many grist mills were erected including those operated by Captain David Whitcomb who built Whitcomb Mill Company #2 upstream from cache creek near current day Dayton In 1814 Adam Bogart started trading goods from his cabin next door at 5th Street & High Street . He soon had customers among local farmers who bought his produce direct from him rather than going through traders like Bogart himself

It was founded on December 12, 1837 by David Farnum and James Moffatt as part of the Northwest Territory. Fremont became a town on February 14, 1846, when it was separated from Athens Township. On November 15, 1907, Fremont became an independent city with a population of 26,592 according to the US Census Bureau. In 1920 it merged with Athens to form the City of Athens-Fremont which had a population of 52,819 in 1990.
