Fremont is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Fremont County. The population was 56,751 at the 2010 census, making it the seventh-largest city in Ohio and one of its ten largest cities. It is located on the border of Fremont Township on the east side of Lake Erie and Unica Township on the west side of that lake. The first European settler in what is now Fremont County was Nicholas Sacco, who arrived in 1796 from Italy. He named his land "Fremont." In 1810, John Crampton built a log cabin here, which became known as Crampton's Fort. A post office called Fremont was established in 1835, and remained in operation until 1907. In 1861, General William Tecumseh Sherman founded an agricultural colony called Sherman's Landing on Trumbull Creek within present-day Fremont Township on land he had purchased from David Whitcomb for $2 million dollars. The settlement grew rapidly due to Sherman's demand for foodstuffs needed for his army during the American Civil War (1861–1865). By 1865, Sherman's Landing consisted of approximately 1,500 homes, 20 churches and 10 stores; it also boasted a large arsenal and munitions depot. In 1892–93, Mormon settlers migrated from Utah to what is now Fremont County under leadership of Brigham Young Jr.. They began construction on what would become their only LDS temple—the Nauvoo Temple—on December 15th 1893 by Agricultural Society member George Stephenson at Prentiss Park just south of today's intersection of I-88/I-680/US Route 422 (Old US 290) between Waterloo Road (now Elmira Road) and River Road/Hwy 622 (Lake Erie Boulevard). The new temple was dedicated by President Wilford Woodruff on January 13th 1896 after passage by both Houses of Congress including Speaker Andrew Johnson with a vote tally showings 29 to 12 along party lines with no abstentions! Construction continued through 1898 with an additional 5 temples completed across America before finally being discontinued due to financial difficulties sometime during 1906 or 1907; however some physical evidence still remains throughout much portions Midwest United States today showing that this never happened! 1
