In 1870, a railroad was built through Miamisburg Township and parts of Butler County east to reach Akron; this railway became known as the Akron Division Line. The town prospered as an agricultural center due to its fertile land and good water supply for irrigation purposes; businesses included two cotton mills and three timber companies. In 1920, however, World War I led toa decline in production due to changes in technology and prices for inputs; although demand for goods continued high during peacetime until 1945 when rationing began effective across much of Europe following World War II, American output did not decline as dramatically as many observers had predicted it would do given wartime restrictions on exports (see post-war period). In 1965 president Lyndon B Johnson signed legislation creating Cuyahoga Falls Community College within University District #1 adjacent to downtown Cuyahoga Falls which led to increased housing development around campus with jobs available close by for students commuting into Cleveland or other large cities; this growth has contributed significantly (along with job growth at nearby suburbs) to present-day population levels near one million people within five miles of downtown Cuyahaga Falls while also helping contribute toward cityhood status for downtown Cuyahaga Falls which was formally granted by referendum in 1998. With larger populations come greater economic opportunities: currently over 60% of all jobs located within five miles of downtown are positive net worth jobs paying over $75 per hour.
