Fostoria, Ohio is a community located in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 3,934 at the 2000 census and has grown to 5,898 since that time. Fostoria is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1836 by two men from neighboring Celina Township: Peter O’Donnell and John Hickey. Fostoria's first post office opened in 1839. It closed in 1845 because of financial difficulty caused by the Panic of 1847. The town received its name from local fur trader Nicholas Fostoria (1795-1875). When he moved his family to this area in 1836, he named it after his brother Nicholas' former trading post on the Scioto River in Celina Township, Michigan Territory (now Celina County).[1] In 1840, when Nicholas built a log cabin on what is now Main Street, he began to sell goods directly to settlers living near him along the Scioto River. At first these settlers were Native American hunters who gathered animal feed from nearby trees; but as agricultural development grew around them, other settlers also began buying furs and goods from Fostorias at high prices for transport downriver to market in Philadelphia or New York City.[2] By 1850 most of the original buildings had been erected and some 1,000 people lived hereabouts,[3] mainly engaged eitherin agriculture or manufacturing.[4] When Cleveland became a city in 1893 following its incorporation as an independent municipality,[5] much of what remained of Fostoria lay within its limits; nevertheless many residents decided to move out during that period because they found their new home more humid and smoggy than their old one back at Parma Township where they had been born and raised[6].
