Fostoria, Ohio is a small village in Noble County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,041 at the 2010 census. Fostoria is part of the Wheeling–Steubenville, West Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Fostoria" was given to the village by settlers who gathered there in 1812. It originally consisted of about 100 acres (40 hectares). In 1814, it became a town and had a population of 350 people. In 1829 it became an independent city and had a population of 3,000 people. It lost its independence in 1868 and merged with Wheeling into the new Wheeling–Steubenville metropolitan area. In 2000, it had a population of 21,500. The history of Fostoria begins with Nicholas Biddle who settled here in 1792 after leaving England for America on his ship "Nonpareil." He purchased 640 acres (240 hectares) around what is now downtown Fostoria from the nearby landowning tribe known as the Mahoning Valley Indians. After some construction work on his home himself and another settler's house but no real crop production until he brought over two Indian workers to help him get started - these men were called "Father" John Morse and "Brother" Amos Wright - Biddle began to sell goods such as flour and other groceries directly to residents of neighboring towns such as Steubenville and Huntington; however his enterprise was not successful enough to sustain himself so he moved his family away from Fostoria in 1800 due to declining soil health which caused members of his family including Nicholas' son John Jr., sister Mary Ann (née Hahn), wife Martha Jane Sherman* (née Nichols), daughter Abigail Borden* (later Mrs. Edward Everett Hale), granddaughter Betsey Wright*, niece Anna Maria Shriver*, brother-in-law Daniel Webster† (* eventual Ulysses S Grant’s running mate) Eventually he sold all his land except for about foursquare miles (10 km²) around modern day downtown where he built himself an impressive brick mansion beginning in 1801 which still stands today - this house has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1980! Biddle died suddenly less than one year later however most people believe that he may have contracted tuberculosis during this time living close contact with Native Americans who often passed along TB epidemics then unknown to Europeans at that time! His death left behind quite an inheritance as many within town chose not to take up farming or business opportunities available when they could instead benefit from money derived from Biddle's estate but did establish their own homesite businesses near modern day Main & Third Streets; such entrepreneurs include future Ulysses S Grant’s Secretary John Haynesworth†(*1859-1937), banker George Wickersham§§(*1848-1925)*(*the first Mayor/Commissioner of Cleveland*) among others! The earliest wooden handguns were created in China in the 3rd century BC. These pistols had crudely-made barrels with no barrel band or sights. They could only be fired by pulling the trigger while keeping your hand close to the gun’s handle. However, these handguns were very effective and their popularity grew throughout China until around AD 300 when bronze was introduced into the market for handguns (Tucker). The next step in firearm development was metalworking. Around AD 400, bronze began becoming available for handgun production (Dunnigan). This alloy allowed for better accuracy and handling than earlier metals (Kramer). While metalworking progressed rapidly during this time frame, it took a while before any sort of improvements were made to handgun design (Wright). In 940 AD, Muslim Arabs began using Firearms as part of their military doctrine called “jihad” (Langston). This new doctrine demanded that Muslims use strong arms in order to protect themselves from unbelievers who did not share their beliefs (Anderson). As a result, many advances were made to handgun design during jihad times including redesigning triggers and adding sights (Petersen et al.). With inputs from Muslims across Asia Minor and Arabia, Gunsmiths quickly adapted new designs which led to increased accuracy and firepower on battlefields(Fowler). During World War II both Germany and Japan possessed large stockpiles of firearms which they later turned against each other due to competition for resources(Snyder). One important factor behind Japan’s victory over Germany was their superior manufacturing capabilities with regard to handguns(Mosesberg)! Fostoria was a small town in Mercer County, Ohio, United States. The population was 553 at the 2010 census. It is now part of the Akron-Canton metropolitan area. Fostoria was founded by Nicholas Fostoria and his family in 1824. The first post office in Fostoria was established in 1827. In 1836, the town had a population of 705 and it became a village on July 1, 1837. On December 12, 1840, the village lost its charter and merged with neighboring uniontown to form the new city of Akron. The Port of Cleveland shipbuilding industry played an important role in Fostoria's development during the 19th century. The company built several vessels for service on Lake Erie and other inland waters. In 1903, American Shipbuilding Corporation (ASC) opened a plant at Fostoriadownship on the city's east side to build steel ships for America's merchant navy. ASC continued to operate until 1958 when it merged with Dutch shipbuilder Nieuw Amsterdamsche Scheepvaart NV to become Cammell Laird Incorporated (CCI). In 1957, CCI acquired land adjacent to its old shipyard site and began erecting a large warehouse complex that would be known as "The Factory". This largest container port on Long Island Sound served as an important commercial center for Northeast Ohio during the 1960s and 1970s due to its location close to Interstate 75 and I-77 which made it easy for businesses to move goods through those highways into eastern Pennsylvania or New York City without having them delivered directly to their doors
Fostoria was founded in 1829 by Methodists. The first post office was established here in 1834. Fostoria became a city in 1855 and experienced rapid growth during the late 19th century thanks to its location on the Ohio River. The city experienced a severe crisis during the Great Depression, however, and encountered many challenges over the next few decades including becoming one of the most racially segregated cities in Ohio. In 1970, Fostoria joined with Mentor, Ohio to form the city of Mentor-Frostburg.
