The first Europeans to explore and settle in what is now Fostoria were French traders and fur traders who established a trading post there in 1792. The town was founded by Moses Swayne in 1806 as an agricultural community on the east side of the Cuyahoga River. In 1814, during the War of 1812, General Anthony Wayne arrived at Fostoria with his army to offer protection from British forces advancing up the river. He ordered his men to stop at Fostoria for dinner and then marched into battle against British forces that night near present-day Sidney Road and Trottoir Avenue. The Battle of Fostoriya resulted in American victory and Wayne's Medal of Honor was presented to him that day by President James K Polk. In 1826, when Cleveland became a village, it included much of what is now Fostoria except for what is now its western edge on both banks of the river. On November 11, 1826, following passage by General George Washington Potter through central Ohio on his way from Fort Dearborn to Yorktown (known today as Pittsburgh), Mayor William McKinney proposed creation of a new town called "Fosta" adjacent to Cleveland within existing Village limits instead of continuing westward along Fifth Street as planned but this proposal failed due largely to objections from residents located nearer downtown Cleveland who feared their homes would be destroyed if they moved out; also voting against inclusion within Village limits were future mayors John Prentice (1829-36) and Edwin Stevens (1838-41). A committee chaired by Methodist preacher Reuben Farnsworth formed on December 5th unanimously recommended incorporation into Village form with enlarged boundaries including all or parts of five other villages in Eastlake Township: Bedford Heights (now Defiance), Brighton Beach/Norwood Heights (now Beverly Hills), Mayfield Heights/Stratholme Woods/Wesley Chapel (now Willow Glen), West Bloomfield Township: Clinton Hill/Wrightstown Terrace/Troy Hill/Newburgh Heights In 1870 annexation proceedings began for Stratholme Woods which included much land east and north of where it presently stands between Newburgh Heights northwest corner Erie St., Troyhill south corner Market St., Wrightstown Terrace northeast corner State Rd., while Clinton Hill was annexed southeast corner Erie St.–northwest corner State Rd.–southwest corner Market St.. This left only Mayfield Heights–Stratholme Woods which had been annexed into Stratholme Park six years earlier.. In 1907 incorporation proceedings were started for Highland Park which included much land east and northof where it presently stands between Nowick Glen northwest corner Erie St., Troyhill south cornered Market St., Wrightstown Terrace northeast cornered State Rd,, while Highland Park had been annexable southwest cornered Erie St.–northwest cornered State Rd.–southwestcornerMarketSt.. This left only Stratholme Woods which had been annexed into Highland Park six year earlier.. On December 9th 1907 resolution number 317 passed overwhelmingly approving incorporation Into Village form with enlarged boundaries including all or parts of five other villages: Bedford Heights (now Defiance), Brighton Beach/Norwood Heights (now Beverly Hills), Mayfield Heights/Stratholme Woods/Wesley Chapel (now Willow Glen), West Bloomfield Township: Clinton Hill/Wrightstown Terrace/Troy Hill/Newburgh Heights .. final approval ceremonies took place January 2nd 1908 followed by effective date February 15th 1908 .. Incorporation forms were filed with Clerk Of Common Pleas dated February 14th 1908 During Prohibition enforcement efforts Comyns agent JB Burchfords unit #5 confiscated over 1 tonnes ($27K) worth illegal narcotics at various properties across village during early 1920s witch hunt known as "Operation purge".
