Fostoria is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, on the Scioto River. The population was 11,719 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing-Warren-Dearborn, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Fostoria were French traders in 1692 who named it "Foret." In 1814, the town was founded by General Nathan Bedford Forrest and his friends as a stop on their journey from Nashville to St. Louis. In 1820, Fostoria became a seat of government for Holmes County when it was created from parts of Waterford and Athens counties. In 1825, Fostoria become part of an international trade junction known as the Great Lakes Commercial District which included Detroit, Cleveland, Buffalo and Milwaukee. The area's growth led to increased business activity and social prominence in early 19th century Fostoria. A schoolhouse built in 1830 served as a community center until 1852 when a new courthouse and jail were constructed nearby on Third Street. Fostoria experienced rapid growth during the late 19th century due to its location at one of several important commercial hubs along Lake Erie; this boom came to an end after World War II because of dwindling demand for goods shipped through that lake route following changes in industrial production around the world. However, since then there has been modest but steady growth with comprehensive planning efforts behind it all – resulting in modern day attractions such as popular nightlife options like The Ritz-Carlton Ballroom & Casino or shopping malls like Saks Fifth Avenue or Macy’s Department Store followed by restaurants including Olive Garden & Benihana steak houses among others making it one of central Ohio’s most vibrant cities today despite its small size relative to other metropolitan areas within Metro Detroit or Chicago metro areas which have much larger populations (though not without their own set challenges). Fostoria was a small town in Fayette County, Ohio, United States, located on the Scioto River. The population was 973 at the 2010 census. Fostoria began as a post office in 1812 and became a city in 1903. The name is derived from the French word "fouster" meaning 'to preserve'. Fostoria is one of two cities in the state of Ohio that are still operating as local municipalities despite having lost their charter status with the state government. The other city is Dayton. In 1812, when Fostoria was founded, it was part of what was known as the Northwest Territory of Ohio. It became a city on December 12, 1903, when it met its first incorporation ordinance. This made it one of only two cities in Ohio to have this distinction (the other being Dayton). The history of Fostoria begins with Captain John Smith's landing on July 6, 1792 during his survey for General George Washington's army around Fort Tuscarawas on the Scioto River. He named his landing point "Fostoria". After several years of exploration by Smith and his crew members, they abandoned their settlement near present-day downtown Fostoria due to lack of food and water supply and returned to England after finding new land further upriver which they named Virginia City after Virginia Company founder James Monroe. In 1814, Colonel David Stone built a dam across the Scioto River at what is now called Stones Ferry so he could power his cotton gin downstream from where he lived on High Street in present-day downtown Fostoriya. That same year saw another important event when Major general Nathaniel Parker replaced Zebulon Pike as commander-in-chief United States forces west of Cincinnati following Pike's death at Battle Creek near Warsaw Township northwest of Dayton on August 14th under orders from President Madison due to organizational problems within Ulysses S. Grant's army over who should command these troops along with reports that Native Americans were harassing white settlers east of Hamilton County including young boys working for their parents or older brothers doing farm work without any protection from Indians because treaty negotiations had not yet ended following Lewis & Clark Expedition’s final crossing over the Missouri River some thirteen months earlier Pike had been appointed lieutenant colonel USArmy Northeast Command based at Fort Wayne but assignment changed upon arrival in area which included parts now belonging to Steuben County northeast of Cincinnati while Pike continued service with Army Northwest Command which headquartered at Fort Wayne also including areas now part Of Adams County northeast o[f Toledo] Aftermath 3 day battle resulted Aaron Burritt killed Lt Col David Stone(acting commanding officer) while Burritt escaped unharmed leading pursuit until finally mounting horse backfired resulting him crashing into tree 20 yards away; total loss $5200 no casualties
Fostoria was founded in 1814 by the Fur traders of the Ohio Country. The town grew rapidly and soon became a major center for fur trade. In 1829, Fostoria became the capital of the newly formed Oregon Territory. The city continued to grow until it reached its peak in 1860 when it had a population of over 20,000 people. However, during the American Civil War, Fostoria was forced to close its doors due to lack of supplies. After the war, the city fell into decline and slowly lost its importance until it was abandoned in 1984.
