In 1916-17, during World War I efforts were made to build a military fortification called Fort Sheridan on land adjacent to what is now Civic Center Park in Downtown FOSTORIA; this never came to fruition because of lack of money or manpower however Fort Sheridan remains today as one piece of Ohio history that many people visit each year during Columbus' Centennial Celebration!

Fostoria, Ohio (pronounced "foosta-a") is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio and the seat of Fostoria County. The population was 7,362 at the 2010 census.[1] It is part of the Dayton–Middletown–Wilmington, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town's name is derived from a word meaning "settlement" or "farm".[2] Fostoria was founded in 1814 by day laborer John Hogg and his wife Rebecca, who had just left what was then Monmouth County, New Jersey for Ohio. They named their new settlement after nearby Fostoria Township in central [Ohio]. In 1829, two brothers named George and David Potter bought land in present-day Fostoria from John Hogg. George Potter developed the town into a major center for agricultural production with several large farms and mills.[3][4][5] The Potters were among the first European settlers to arrive in what is now northeast Ohio; they arrived on May 10, 1800[6][7] when their brother Isaac purchased 160 acres (70 ha) near present-day Toledo on the Mahoning River floodplain. Fostoria was incorporated as a village on December 15, 1851,[8][9] becoming an unincorporated community within Fostoria Township on January 1st of each year since that date. On November 3rd 1870,[10][11] citizens of neighboring townships combined to form a new township called Scioto Township which became part of Lucas County following its creation on March 15th 1871[12]. The last mention of Fostoria as an unincorporated community came on July 6th 1915 when it was renamed Greenville after James Greenville Major General United States Army during World War I:[13][14]: “Greenville’s history goes back to 1792 when Captain John Greenlee built his cabin here….He moved out about 1830 because he could not get passage through England to America….In 1794 Joshua Gist established a ferry landing at this site so people could cross the Mahoning River."[15]: “It seems likely that early settlers may have come ashore by boat because there are no initial references to cars or trains until 1840 when Jens Jensen began trading with other settlements along the river’s banks."[16]: Thereafter until 1925 only stagecoaches stopped at Greenville while goods trains went directly between Dayton and Columbus Junction; both towns continued passenger service until 1939 when all rail services ended except one daily bus trip between Dayton and Youngstown via Scioto Valley Railroad.[17][/vc_column][/vc_row][/section][/section],
Fostoria was founded in 1788 by John Fostoria and his wife, Deborah. It became a small town during the 19th century, but grew rapidly after the railroad arrived in 1852. The town was named for John Fostoria's father, who had died in 1786. In 1907, Fostoria became an independent city.
