Fostoria (formerly Fayette) is a city in the Southern Tier of Ohio, United States. The population was 24,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Fostoria's roots can be traced back to 1812 when it was founded as a trading post on the Great Miami River by General John Brown and his troops during the Indian Wars. In 1814, Fostoria became a town after being passed through a vote by the townspeople and Cuyahoga County commissioners. On July 7, 1837, it was renamed Brownsville after Major General Andrew Jackson who had fought in campaigns against Native Americans in that area. Finally on October 15, 1938 it was given its current name of Fostoria after Congressman James K. Polk Jr., who served in Congress from Ohio from 1841 to 1863 and again from 1865 to 1887. The first large industrial development in Fostoria took place with the opening of an armament manufacturing plant by J.P Morgan & Company in 1916 which produced machine guns for World War I and then pistols for World War II; this factory closed in 1957. A new armament manufacturing plant opened by Winchester Ammunition Corporation which produced Winchester rifles between 1966 and 1990; this also closed at some point but reopened as part of Waco Ammo between 2009 and 2016 before closing again due to poor sales around 2018 In 2006 Fostoria hosted "Ohio's Storied Manufacturing Village" celebration featuring exhibits about 127 local businesses exhibiting products ranging from agriculture to engineering to home improvement Today there are a number of small businesses that have experienced growth thanks to online marketing or local partnerships while many others have been forced out by economic hard times including: National Tire & Rubber Co.; Ford Motor Company;; Arby's restaurant chain;; Menard's department store chain;; The Wellness Spa;; Wexner Center for Art and Culture In addition many jobs have been created through outsourcing such as: Canon Inc.; Wyndham Worldwide Holdings Limited; Pathmark Inc.; Covidien plc.; Siemens AG; Schlage Incorporated; L Brands LLC.. Fostoria, Ohio was founded in 1810 by a group of settlers from New York. The town quickly became a major center for the agricultural industry and the banking sector. Fostoria was also home to one of the first water systems in America. In addition to its many cultural attractions, Fostoria is also known for its unique history and architecture. The town began as an encampment on the banks of the Scioto River. In 1810, a group of entrepreneurs led by George Stephenson purchased land east of Fostoria and developed it into a community known today as Fostoria. The original settlers were primarily Dutchmen and their families who had come to Ohio from New Netherland in search of new land to settle. The men built homes made out of logs that they gathered from nearby tree stands and rivers. They named their settlement after Lord Dunmore’s ship, HMS Discovery, which had been lost off America during the Revolutionary War. The development of the railroad system helped make Fostoria an important center for economic growth in early 20th century America. By 1915, however, cotton production had become dominant in the town’s economy and largely displaced agriculture as its primary focus. Today, Fostoria is still home to a number of businesses including two hospitals (the Medical University Hospital & St Joseph’s Hospital), several schools (including four high schools), three libraries (one county-owned and one municipally owned), two casinos/resorts, two golf courses, seven parks/recreational areas, five miles of bike trails, plus numerous historical markers commemorating its pioneer culture and history
Fostoria was founded in 1814 as a small village on the Scioto River in what is now Ohio. In 1824, it became the capital of Ohio and remains that today. The town grew rapidly after the Americans acquired it from the British in 1803, thanks to its location on the river's rapid current. Fostoria was named for General Isaac Fostoria, an American Revolutionary War hero who helped lead an army against British forces at Battle of Fallen Timbers.
