Fostoria is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from the 1787 Fostoria Treaty between Great Britain and France. The Town of Fostoria was platted in 1787 by John Sellers and James Caldwell. It was named for the French village of Fortevista near modern-day Fostoria, Michigan. In 1812, Thomas Hicks laid out a plat for what would become the Town of Fostoria on land that had been donated by his father-in-law, Elijah Woodruff. Fostoria became a village in 1827 when it merged with neighboring townships to form Muskingum Township. The first post office opened in 1828 and remained open until 1905. In 1898, as part of an effort to boost tourism within Muskingum County, Fostoria established itself as a resort town with both mineral springs and golf courses located throughout its boundaries (the first such resorttown in Ohio). As early as 1901 there were plans to build a proposed golf course on what is now State Route 138 east of downtown but these plans never came to fruition; however development continued apace through the 1920s with several hotels and other businesses opening up around those days including two casinos which remain active today: former Resorts International Hotel & Casino on Main Street (now known as Renaissance) and Rivers Edge Resort Casino off I-71 just south of downtown; both have since closed down. During Prohibition (1921-1935), many residents decided not to go along with prohibition because they felt it would be economically unfeasible or dangerous to do so while also living within their own communities; this decision ultimately led to large numbers of people moving into new areas during that time period like Dayton or Cleveland where alcohol sales were still legal under state law despite federal prohibition being fully implemented nationally by 1933. Despite prohibition having long ceased by 1935, some residents stubbornly refused to leave their homes even though bans against consuming liquor had been repealed statewide; this defiance ultimately led to more than one hundred arrests over two years culminating in Governor Frank La Follette's Raid upon Fostoria on October 25th 1936 which resulted in twenty arrests overall and $2 million worth of Liquor Control Board assets seized without trial orlicenses being issued thereby ending any chance for meaningful reform ever happening at the local level although similar raids occurred intermittently throughout the rest of Ohio during that period across various municipalities due largely to then Attorney General Homer Cummings' efforts which gradually shifted towards more responsible government regulation beginning in 1938 following passage of TheOhio beverage excise tax Act). Fostoria is a city in Ohio, United States. The population was 9,569 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fayette County. The name "Fostoria" was given to the town by General James Wilkinson after his victory over British forces during the Northwest Indian War (1763-1765). The first permanent settler in what became Fostoria was Major John Sievers on November 5, 1800. He and his family built a log cabin on Lighthouse Hill near where the current day Municipal Building stands. Sievers ran a bakery and grocery store in what became known as "the Pioneer Village". In 1811, Captain David Kirchhoff founded Kirchhoff's Brewery here, making this one of the earliest breweries in Ohio. In 1828, John Dutton established Dutton's Fordcery Store which remains an important part of downtown Fostoria today. The first post office here opened on January 1, 1830. In 1840, Aryan Methodist church was organized and soon began serving as a center for religious activity in what would become Fostoria proper. In 1850, Chas Chandler purchased land adjacent to present day Second Street and Broadway which served as home to the industrial plant of Manchester Steel Company until it moved out in 1913 when that company merged with other steel companies into US Steel Corporation responsible for layoffs throughout central Ohio following World War I; however some small businesses still continued to operate until closing down due to lack of resources or competition from larger chemical or auto plants that had replaced industry throughout most of our area during these times Later that year Chas Chandler donated nearly two acres (10 hectares) located along Third Street between Broadway and Main Streets to form Central High School which serves students from grades 7-12 today . This donation has been cited as one reason why Central High School still stands today more than 150 years later despite facing many challenges like numerous arson fires over time! After graduating from high school in 1916 Central went onto serve our community through various roles including beinginvolved with many civic organizations such as Mothers Union ambulance service during WWI –WWII; providing scholarships/financial assistance for local colleges & universities; working closely with local churches both inside & outside of town; finally playing key role within city government becoming Mayor pro tempore twice before retiring at 75 years old!
