The present binocular company was started in 1903 by J.H. Kapp and is still in business today. In 1955, the American Optical Society presented a paper on the history of binoculars entitled "The Origins of Binocular Technology." This paper documented how binoculars had been used as early as 1795 when Benjamin Franklin designed a pair of eyeglasses with 24x magnification so he could watch small details at a distance. By 1800, people in America had begun purchasing telescopes to view more distant objects. However, until the introduction of binoculars, it was difficult for people to see what was happening close at hand because the naked eye cannot see very far away!

Fostoria, Ohio is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Fostoria has been called "the bread and butter of the Mahoning Valley", and its economy supports manufacturing plants and service businesses such as restaurants and retail stores. The first settler in what is now Fostoria was John White in 1811. He founded a log cabin on the banks of the Mahoning River. In 1815, he married Anna Webster and they moved to what is now downtown Fostoria. They raised two children there: John White II (1817-1899) who became an attorney and judge in Muskingum County, Ohio; and Anna Websterworth (1820-1912), who became known as "Mrs. Fostoria". In 1826 when Ohio statehood was granted to the United States, John White set off for Cincinnati with his children to make their case before Congress for recognition of their new state. He arrived too late to be part of the inaugural meeting that created government under Ulysses S Grant but he did attend a later session where Northwest Territory was organized into Ohio Territory which included parts of what are now Muskingun County,Mahoning Valley region including present day Fostoria Township

Fostoria (formerly Fosston) is a city in the southwestern corner of Ohio, United States. The population was 10,811 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Cincinnati–Youngstown, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Fostoria were French missionaries in 1769. The town was named after François-Jacques de Fosston, a British officer who had been sent out to explore and trade with the Native Americans in the area. In 1805, John Copley patented 640 acres (2 km²) of land west of present day Fostoria Township on the Scioto River. This area became known as “The Domain” because it was not open to settlement by white people until 1812 when an act of Congress extended Indian hunting and fishing rights to settlers on these lands. In 1824, David Denny founded a flour mill on the Scioto River just south of today’s downtown Fostoria. Denny’s mill produced flour for local markets and also exported flour from Illinois to Pittsburgh and other cities across America. The mills closed around 1928 but left their mark on downtown Fostoria which still features many street namesakes that date back to that time: Noodle alley, Dutch oven alley, Molly Malone's Alley etcetera
