In 1907, it became an independent city. On July 1, 2009, Fostoria merged with neighboring Vandalia to form one municipality known as Akron-Canton-Muncie MSA. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and 0.4% is water. As of 2010, there were 7,826 people living in Fostoria township (the incorporated portion), 2% of whom lived in unincorporated parts ofLucas County; and 9% who were foreign born (non-U.S.).

Fostoria, Ohio is a small community located in Findlay County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,819 at the 2010 census. Fostoria is named for General James FOSTER (1784-1854), an American general who served in the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. The town was founded in 1859 by Captain Isaac HOLMES and his wife Esther LEE HOLMES. In 1861, when Union forces invaded Ohio to suppress slavery, Captain Holmes moved his family to what is now Cleveland from Fostoria to help resistance against the slavecatchers. In 1863, while fighting in the Union army during the Gettysburg Campaign, Captain Holmes was killed while leading a cavalry charge against Confederate forces under General Robert E. Lee. The first post office opened in 1859 and changed its name to "Foster" in 1865 because of local opposition to using General Foster's real name which would have been associated with slavery. The current spelling of "Foster" originated with residents of Fostoria who desired a more pronounced H sound than that found in other towns nearby and wanted their names to be known as such only within their own community. After years of debate among locals about whether or not they should change their name back to "Foster", it was decided unanimously that "Fostoria" would be retained as the town's official name and no other municipality or village should receive this distinction without unanimous consent from all residents involved. In 1927, voters passed a resolution requesting that the Town Hall be renamed after Samuel AUSTIN KNOX (1824-1920). At Mr. Knox's death on October 10th 1920 he had leaves behind him an estate valued at $1 million ($10 million adjusted for inflation). With this inheritance came responsibility for funding both physical repairs and improvements inside and outside of Town Hall including new streetlights and sidewalks; work began immediately upon receipt of funds provided by Mrs Knox through her willuary trust set up specifically for this purpose alone! On November 12th 1922 Mr Knox' widow donated $50000 dollars towards construction projects which included expanding one wing of Town Hall so that it could seat 100 more people; complete renovation of two brick buildings on Main Street which had served as Schoolhouse & Meeting House since 1793; additions/ renovations totaling over $30K were made to both structures resulting in them becoming Stately Two story brick buildings having multiple storefronts each! As part as part of ribbon cutting ceremonies following completion these projects were also dedicated by then Mayor Charles JONES (1900-1977) during an event attended byapproximately 400 citizens! This demonstrate just how important Town Hall has become not only locally but statewide over time!
