Fostoria is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron–Canton, OH-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Fostoria was founded in 1827 as a sawmill settlement and then incorporated as a village in 1868. In 1976, it became the city of Fostoria. The first European settlers to arrive in what is now Muskingum County were men from Lancaster County who established a ferry service across the Scioto River between that county and Portage Township on July 10, 1800. They named their new community for George FOSTER, an American Revolutionary War soldier and member of the Committee of Five who traveled with Ebenezer LOGAN to survey lands near Cincinnati chartered by Congress on March 3, 1795. The first mill in Fostoria was built by John MILLER on the banks of the Scioto River about two miles upstream from where it currently stands. The millself did not operate until 1827 when it was acquired by Nicholas BARNES who renamed it the Northern Mills Company. By 1840 there were ten mills operating in western Ohio including six within one mile of each other along State Route 12 north of downtown Fostoria In 1868, due to increasing demand for flour products from local farmers and towns throughout central Ohio, village incorporation was decided upon as an option for residents living inside Muskingum County’s five rural wards (Allegheny Village; Arlington; Becksville; Dunkirk Township; and Whitehall). The vote followed recommendations made by a committee appointed to consider villagehood issues after complaints from residents about long lines at local stores during harvest season or high prices for flour products advertisements found in newspapers serving those areas outside Muskingum County limits .
